Well, guys,

I was coming from Nashville to Memphis on I 40 in a blinding rainstorm this afternoon, and the trucks and cars around me started turning on their hazard warning lights, so I did as well. I also pulled into the right lane and slowed to about 60 mph. It was getting dark and raining hard.

"What's that white pickup doing on the LEFT hand side of the median at right angles to the road, and moving fast? Oh, no, he's headed right for me!" I hit the brakes, but it was over in one second. I hit the truck almost head on--at a closing speed of about 120 mph. He had crossed the grass median at highway speed from the other direction, overcorrected, and came right at me. There was no where to go, and no time to do anything. The crash totaled my beloved V and his truck. If someone will give me an email address, I'll send pics to post tomorrow for you all to see. The V performed admirably, as the entire car collapsed around me. When you see the pics, you will not believe I got out alive. Both front air bags deployed, the windshield split in two--but I'm OK. I am incredibly sore where the seat belt wrenched me across my left shoulder, and my left wrist and hand have a big knot on them, (I think because they got caught between the left side of the steering wheel and the inside of the driver's door.) I know--that's about a 15 inch span. Wait till you see the pics.

The police had difficulty communicating with the other driver. He had a South of our Border persuasion, and couldn't speak English. Finally another "brother" stopped and did the interpretation. He said (thru the interpreter) that he had insurance, but didn't have proof with him. The state cop told me to fill out a form he gave me, send it in with $4, and I could get a copy of the accident report. You've got to be kidding me. So, I didn't get the other driver's license, insurance, name, plate number or anything else. I assume that will be on the report.

I kneeled behind the car and thanked God for sparing me--again, as this isn't the first time. So my V went down with 125k+ miles and protected me til the end.

Me? I'm buying another '04 or '05 V. I wouldn't drive anything else.

From Memphis, tired and sore, but alive,

Jack

Not sure if it's good to know one could survive a 120MPH impact...

I remember rain storms in Florida that would come down in buckets and people would fly through them with zero caution or driving experience and hydro....then spin...Not good.

Horrible story, but s happy ending though. Gives flashbacks, had s similar accident with my 98 SLS. Slower speef, but I ended up in the hospital (no seatbelt).
Glad that your ok. As far as the V,,,you used the hell out of it.

Like everyone else, I'm glad to hear you are okay.

At 125K miles, atleast you drove and enjoyed the car. I have mine pretty much parked now concerned about mileage. Is that the right thing to do because you never know when this might happen. Spend three years not driving your car like you really want to and like you said in an instant its gone!

And I get the feeling that guy did not have insurance.

Good job! You survived! I just read the whole thread looking for the pics.

(Why would you own a car you don't drive? This guy is living proof that if you wreck it or wear it out you can get another one).

I'll tell you what.. I have seen many accidents and a accident at 120 mph and something that "Normaly" nobody survives. Even a accident at 50 mph is deadly head on with another vehicle. I am glad to see that you are ok. But man I wanna see how the "v" held up and the damage it made.

It sure sounds like:
1) Vs can last a long time if taken care of properly
2) they're pretty damn safe in case of collisions

Well,

I'm so sore I can hardly stand up. My left arm really hurts, but I'll live.

Thanks to you all for your kind words. I sent the pics to Cadillac Tony so he can post...and you all can see what a great car we really have.

I'm looking to buy another silver V, '04 or '05. I've contacted members on the classified part of the form. If you hear about a car for sale, let me know. Cash waiting, no delays.

I'll keep the forum posted on the outcome with the insurance companies.

All the best,

Jack

I don't think he was going 120 mph. He said he was going 60 mph. I think he meant a closing speed of 120 mph, 60 mph (him) + 60 mph (other guy) = 120 mph. N'est pas?

Yes,that's my understanding too.
That's one of the reasons why he's still alive ; against a non-moving object going 120mph,the energy to be dissipated by the V structure would have been much higher than that (any Mechanical engineers wish to elaborate ?).

(any Mechanical engineers wish to elaborate ?).

I fancy myself a mechanical engineer, but I am not smart enough to elaborate. However I believe the impact force increases logarithmically with respect to velocity. If you take the square root of speed, divided by the log (base 2) of distance between the bodies, and factor in the hyperbolic function of elapsed time, I believe you will be left with an answer that is very messy and incoherent.

I'm thinking the energy increases proportionnally with the square of the speed. So twice as fast means 4 times more energy to dissipate.
( $1092, did you rob the casino ???)

I have a nice low mileage Eldo I could set you up with!

1973 Eldorado Convertible
Triple Black Beauty

Owners book and records available

8.2 Liter Big Block, because size matters. 365hp/ 535tq

Very Rare split power leather seats.
Leather appears to be original and in excellent condition
Tilt and Telescopic steering wheel
Cruise Control
Twilight Sentinel
GuideMatic headlight dimmer
Factory alarm system
Electric Rear Defrost
Soft Ray tinted Glass
Glass rear window
AM/FM radio with WORKING 8 TRACK (Johnny Cash included)
Remote control trunk lock
Automatic Climate control, HVAC is fully functional blows hot and Frosty cold.
Automatic seat release
Digital clock (That actually keeps time!)
Lamp monitors (fiber optics)
Trunk mat

Fortunately this car is not equipped with the Trackmaster or Ride leveling features.

Recent repairs since 2004 (receipts included)

Rebuilt motor (professionally) 7,269 miles
Heater Core 11,771 miles
Rebuilt Transmission 15,380 miles
New Half Shafts 15,380 miles
New Alternator and Battery 15,700 miles
Overhauled AC 10,000 miles

The car runs beautiful and is an absolute show stealer.

The fact this car is unrestored makes it more fun to drive, the prior owners used it as a sunny day car. I believe I am the 3rd owner, I’ve put about 5,000 miles on the car since I bought it. The prior owner of 20+ years believed the Odo has been over one time putting this car at 115,900 actual miles. Look at the leather and the brake pedal, I believe him.

The original horns are included, however there are 118 db Wolo air horns that play the theme from “The Godfather” currently installed in their place.

$13,500.00

(I'm such an opportunistic bag of crap)
