View Full Version : Help With Virus! CadillacSTS2003 10-24-07, 01:23 AM Ok so apparently somehow last night my lap top picked up a virus
It will not allow me to get onto the net even though it says im wirelessly connected, windows keeps detecting it and sends me to the net to try and delete it but since i cannot get on that doesnt help
Somehow it has rendered my Norton (which expired anyways 4 days ago) useless
I have comcast high speed and get Macfee for free but i cannot connect to download it.
Ive already tried a system restore three times all at different points and everytime is comes back saying its unsuccessful
what can i do guys? dkozloski 10-24-07, 01:43 AM Boot up in safe mode and see if you can do a Norton antivirus scan. Hit F8 when the boot process starts. CadillacSTS2003 10-24-07, 02:00 AM yup
thats what im doing not
it says i cannot load it because im not an admin or something
but i opened it under the admin settings
im on my sisters laptop and i dled and burned a trial version of Norton and one of Mcafee
hopefully they will work
but anymore ideas? CadillacSTS2003 10-24-07, 03:58 AM ok
well i can get it sort of
but i need some virus software that i can burn to a disc and upload on the infected computer that doesnt require net connection... Cadillacboy 10-24-07, 12:20 PM AVG Software ?
I think you should restore your computer to the condition prior to picking up the virus as well .If you have a system restore like Sony Vaio ,it serves you correctly Go to http://avast.com/eng/home-registration.php and download and install the free Home Edition. This is a very nice piece of software. It's on all our PCs.
After installing and activating Avast!, do a "Boot Scan". This option should be asked after you install it. I would suggest the option "Move to Chest" when prompted. Also install Avast! on your other PCs for maximum protection that doesn't use a lot of memory or resources from your PC.
Should you need further help, let me know. :) CadillacSTS2003 10-24-07, 12:51 PM its a dell if it matters and ive tired system restore 3 times no go it keeps telling me it couldnt be restored try an eailer date (which i have)
i can detect the virus now its worm.win32.netsky but anytime i go to remove it its so damn slow it wont start running to elminate it
i keep getting a popup from windows too saying it has detected a virus and then i hit ok and it tries to send me to explorer to a sight to kill it which even further slows down my computer...
ibwd i shall try it tonight, do you think it will work? does it work well? my laptops got alot of memeory but like 90% of it is full (i mention that b/c you say that its good on computers that dont use alot of memory)
thanks alot guys please keep the ideas coming That came from email:
Analysis
Worm.Win32.Netsky is a program that propagates by attacking other machines and copying itself to them. Worms may replace files, but do not insert themselves. Read more about it here: http://www.viruslist.com/viruses/encyclopedia?virusid=49456
I meant that Avast! doesn't use a lot of memory. It's a good thing to have. I may be able to get you some more information on how to remove it a little later today -- I'll try my best... 99esteees 10-24-07, 02:46 PM I'll tell you what. If you run Firefox as your browser and run Spybot S&D, AdAware, and Kaspersky or Mcafee every once in awhile, you will never have probs with your PC. That is, if you are careful about downloading from P2P networks and torrent sites.

windir is probably c:\windows reformat your hard drive and reinstall windows; when you reinstall Norton, you are good for another year. reformat your hard drive and reinstall windows; when you reinstall Norton, you are good for another year.
Screw the Norton part. It's no better than Avast! and the price choice is obvious. Plus, Avast! isn't annoying and is better in my opinion and many others' opinions.
... And, hell yes, always use Mozilla Firefox for browsing; always!
... And, indeed, Spybot Search and Destroy is good to run once a month.
Avoid the torrent sites. You really have to know what you're doing to get a real torrent to crack that nice software. No porn either. lol :histeric: CadillacGurl 10-24-07, 08:04 PM reformat your hard drive and reinstall windows; when you reinstall Norton, you are good for another year.
but then i lose all my data... CadillacGurl 10-24-07, 08:13 PM I'll tell you what. windir is probably c:\windows
checked cant find any of those under C:\windows but then i lose all my data...
which is why we always backup
all my data gets copied to an external harddrivel; all my install cds are copied there as well, so when I do have to reformat and reinstall windows, reinstalling everything else is a piece of cake. I found something for you...
http://avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html
Download, install, and run that. Don't try manually deleting any files because you may delete the wrong ones which may screw up the Windows OS. CadillacSTS2003 10-24-07, 10:04 PM wait
so i should dl that!?!?!
i downloaded avast home its kinda weird the user interface its like a cd player thing
i have it doing a thorough scan of C:\windows
its been doing it for about an hr and scaned 7316 files thus far and still scanning...
should i dl that as well? CadillacSTS2003 10-25-07, 12:58 PM the 2nd program the avast virus cleaner detected NOTHING
should i run it under windows normally? i did it under the safe mode
the other one was still searching last time i checked it before school. CadillacGurl 10-26-07, 01:16 PM Update: Well Jason took his lappy to the Geek Squad and he's gonna be 2-3 days without his lappy so he's using mine. If I'm posting and my grammar sucks and I'm not capitalizing, its Jason not me. :) Just do a boot scan. Nevermind though. The squad should know how to fix it. Good luck, Jason... dwight.j.carter 10-26-07, 05:07 PM what you need is an external hard drive so you can back up the data. Then you can just reformat without losing data.
I use windows live one care it virus scans, blocks spyware and automatically defrags my hard drive and clears my cookies once a week. |
