View Full Version : Ontario CTS Owners for white LED update ? Anyone notice the main CTS post for an update of the LED back lighting for the HVAC controls?

I think that this is one CTS mod worth doing. I've always been disappointed that the back lighting is all different in my 06 CTS. The instruments are mostly white on black, with the exception of the orange odometer. My base radio DIC is one shade of orange, and the HVAC is a different shade or orange. Probably because the radio is made by Seimens, and the HVAC is made by Denso.
I'm fairly handy with electronics, and can probably source the LEDs locally.
Let me know if anyone is interested.
Anyone have any spare radio from a Navigation upgrade ? Tomm did that a couple years ago. He's actually sold his CTS, and he gave his white LED HVAC controls to me.
I've had it in my car since the start of summer I think.

So how do you like the colour? White I presume, or is it blue? How is it during daylight? That’s' something that I would consider. Is there a solution for the radio? If so count me in.
I don't have a spare radio or HVAC control unit. I didn't notice the date of the original post.

I love the colour... As far as if it's white or blue, check out the pictures above, you be the judge. They call it white, but it looks more blue to me...
During daytime it just looks like dark blue with white letters. Short answer is NOT immediately, but I'm still working on it.
I've been looking at my display colours, and I'm not sure what I want right now.
My radio is yellow. My HVAC controls are more orange. So at the moment, I'm thinking of just making the HVAC yellow, and maybe I'd be happy.
Updating the HVAC controls is fairly easy, and low risk. Doing the non-nav radio is much more complicated, but not impossible. I'd like to get a spare radio to work with and take apart to figure out what the LEDs look like. Could be a totally different LED design. (radio Siemens, HVAC Denso). If a different LED, then getting both the radio and HVAC to match in colour would be less likely. And then back to my original problem of having miss matched display colours.
I'd also like to figure out if there is a way to remove the polarization of the radio. When I wear my polarized sun glasses, the radio brightness drops significantly. If I tilt my head to an angle left or right the radio will go totally black. The HVAC controls don't do this. Always the same brightness.
Anyone else have the same issues?
When I have a moment, I'm going to check for a local supplier of the HVAC LEDs. I'll buy a variety and do some experimentation on the HVAC side first. I took some pictures to show the difference in colour between the two displays.

I don't mind the radio display colours.

The HVAC control has an orange tone, and it has a slight orange background colour, while the radio has a more contrasting black background.
Here are the two displays, without any editing of the image.

Hi John,
I'll get you some picures tomorrow night. The CTS is not home until then. But yeah, I definately see what you're talking about! That white display looks great, just in case you need one I have a spare Hvac control that has gone a little hazy that you can have for testing led's etc.
Cheers,
Eric I'd be interested in your spare HVAC control.
I'd order a variety of replacement LED colours to try out.
Also looking for a regular radio/CD unit to experiment with. I'm in mississauga quite often especially next week and could bring it down and meet up with you.
Eric Hi Eric. Sent you a PM.
Talk to you later in the week. Sorry can't reply to your pm(need more posts) but will get in touch with you next week sometime about getting that hvac to you... OK.
Call me at 905-823-4533 during the evening sometime. | |
