AutoNews: GM Cuts Shift At Hamtramck
GM cuts shift at Detroit plant

Ryan Beene

Automotive News | October 16, 2007 - 4:48 pm EST
DETROIT -- General Motors will idle production at its Detroit Hamtramck assembly plant for two weeks beginning Dec. 14, then drop a shift and permanently lay off 767 hourly workers.

The plant, which assembles the Cadillac DTS and the Buick Lucerne, was operating on a two-shift schedule, producing 40 vehicles per hour on each shift. Dec. 14 will mark the beginning of a down week, with the following week used to reconfigure plant operations to produce 56 vehicles per hour for the remaining shift, said GM spokesman Tom Wickham.

GM decided to idle the Hamtramck plant because of decreased demand for the Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS.

“Sales of the DTS continue to be steady, but our capacity is going to be greater than forecasted demand,” Wickham said.

After the layoffs, the remaining 1,083 hourly employees will return to work on Jan. 2.

One DTS sold in San Antonio last week. Maybe that will help.

...I wish it were enough.

Personally, I think Cadillac is in for a dry spell for the next few years. The CTS line will be expanded by 2 (a coupe and a wagon). The coupe will do well in the US, but I don't expect much from the wagon.

But the SRX, STS, and DTS are all "waiting for God", and will meet Him by the end of the decade. I hope the new crop arrive at about the time the old guard goes to its reward.

Well exactly WHEN is production to end for the DTS? I’ve heard 1 year
from today and 2 years from today (meaning the 2010 model.)

I traded my 06 DTS for an 08 E-350 MB Sport. Big mistake. Hate the
10 year’s behind electronics. Especially the Nav. I hate the Nav so bad
that I bought a $700 Garmin Nuvi 680 to sit on the dash. (Which, by
the way is one great little 4” miracle. It doesn’t look so hot on the dash
of a new car but it is so easy, colorful and fast that I don’t mind.)

Anyway, I'll be going back to Caddy when that new model comes out.
BUT, I do hope that the rear end doesn’t looked so chopped off. (I think
the new CTS rear end looks terrible!) Of course only my humble opinion.

Ditto. Two Caddys in two years. I sure wish the American loyalty were there with other folks.

If I understand right, the DTS, STS, and Lucerne will all end production after the 2010 model year, when a new rear-drive (thank the Lord) platform will supplant them. So, late 2010/early 2011. Of course, things can change.

I admired a few and even touched one. Not sure that counts.

Well, my 2006 DTS will be pushing 100,000 miles by then. If the new one comes out in the fall of 2010.... that would be just the right time to trade. :cloud9:

Superjim, are you sure you want to buy any car in the first model year? I just changed my 03 DHS for an 07 STS, totally different car of course, but going back through the Cadillac forum for the STS before I bought, I could see that the bugs from 05 had been sorted out by the 07 model year...

Good point. Will have to do some serious thinking about that. For now, will just wait and see, I guess. Maybe my '06 will be good for an extra year and I will get one the SECOND year of production. :hmm:

Jim, you could always pick up a 2010 Lincoln MKS for a couple years in between the two Cadillacs. (Sorry, couldn't resist. Though my dad was a GM retiree, my brother-in-law is a Ford retiree.) :lildevil:

I LOVE buying a car when it is a BRAND NEW first year production car!

Having a NEW MODEL is 80% the excitement and enjoyment for me
(and my ego.) If something goes wrong it will get fixed. No big deal.
And, a couple of little warranty trips is a small trade-off for the “NEW”
thrill!

NEW, NEW, NEW! MORE, MORE, MORE!

AGREED 100 percent.

Thats why I bought a 2006 instead of a 2005. The '05 was cheaper... but the '06 had the new body style and my ego says that people would be able to tell the difference and KNOW that I had a "NEW" Cadillac.

I think a lot of production is down industry wide. But in my neighborhood i know of 4 DTS just like mine. All have the titanium paint. They are all 06 or newer. I am also noticing a few others that are PIMPED up with vinyl tops and fancy grilles.
