How long does N* have to idle for it to use the same amount of gas as it does for starting it? anyone know. curious because I was wondering when the benefits of turning of the car while idling occurs.

An idling N*, in D or N, uses practically zippo in gas, given the traffic light or intersection waits on average.

Turn the engine off every time you have a 30 second idle and the starter motor rebuild people and battery builders will get richer.....

I have heard it said, if you are going to sit more than 10 minutes (maybe 5, I forget exactly), shut it off.

I agree..not worth shuting her off for a short time. if im in stopped traffic, i shut her off all the time

Doesn't doing that shorten the starter's life.

I usually keep her running bundy, only if im in a prolonged traffic jam would i shut her off. Im sure doing it often will kill the starter at some point.

Depends on the engine temperature. If it's 30 degrees outside and the engine hasn't warmed up yet, it's going to take a lot more fuel to start.

A hot start doesn't use a lot of fuel. Maybe a minute's worth of idling.

Part of the reason hybrid cars get city mileage almost equal to highway mileage is they don't idle.
