Hey what's up guys, I want to add a sub or two to my 2000 SLS with Bose, I know about the line level output converter and all that jazz, and am just wondering about some other things:
I'm 99 percent sure I'm getting either one 12" Memphis M3 sub or two 12" Memphis M3 subs. I can get a good deal on them, so price (on the subs) is not really an issue. My concern is picking the right amp and whatnot.
Each sub is 400 watts RMS, 800 watts peak, DVC two ohms. What type/size amp would be best for running this system?
Any help would be appreciated, please let me know about anything else you think I should know about this project
alright, thanks for the replies -
I'm also wondering - for anyone that "knows their subwoofers"... if you were looking for a good, reliable, well built sub that sounds good with all types of music, would you go for memphis m3's or mtx 5500's? I heard from someone that Memphis are "competition subs" and that they are designed to be louder than others, yet wear out faster than others. Any input on this?
so could you vouch for the practicality of getting two 12" m3s? Are they designed to be louder, yet wear out faster?
It's generally the same thing in catamaran sailing / racing - you can buy a $4,000 carbon / mylar laminate sail that will be dead in two years, but is the fastest design, or a $2,000 dacron sail that'll last for 10 years but isn't quite as fast.
That's the vibe I was getting when I talked to the dude I know that has one - they aren't the type of subs you want to be using everyday just for listening to music driving down the road, they are for the "once-in-a-while, blast your ass" type. But I don't know anything about subs which is why I came here.
if you jump the bass boost up like in a comp then yea theyll blow
if you power them right then no youll have no problem
i have had my 3 JL 12w6s a comp and sq sub for 4 years and they havent crapped out on me yet
Alright, I really need some help with picking an amplifier.
I purchased two Memphis M3 12" subs - each sub is 400 watts R.M.S., 800 watts peak, and is 2ohm DVC.
The thing that really has me confused is the power and impedance ratings - bridging and whatnot, and the dual voice coils, as well as amp channels, etc.
so are you saying to get a single channel 4 ohm amp, then run one wire from the amp to the first sub, and then a wire from the first sub to the second sub?
im running two polk dbs they can handle about 1000 watts together and im using the Memphis M class MCD1000. you wouldnt believe how loud it is and it doesnt draw much current because it has a lower internal resistance than the Power Reference amps. also two m class 500 Ds would work great.
dual voice coil is an option to wire your subs into a load in which your amp can hanle them. 4 & 2 ohms is common for most d class amps under 1000 watts. the memphis m class d series 1000 watts is 1 ohm stable. it actually puts out about 1200 watts.
US AMP DE-1000
1 ohm stability
underrated RMS 1000 watts
true rms close to 1750....
powers my 3 12w6s
