Mechanic told me flowmaster wouldn't fit, not enough space to work with? Anyone got a FM on a catera? I know the out let is dual. I have no clue about this. Do I need new tailpipes with it too? If somebody can point me out in the right direction, greatly appreciated.

www.summitracing has good prices on universal mufflers http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=700+115+%2D44585&D=%2D44585 here is results under mufflers and resonators which is actually the big box mufffler in the back although i did read somewhere that fully welded mufflers produced best power I have the two resonators/mufflers cut from car and may want a quiet muffler cause mine now sounds good just rattles Keep us posted on what you get and what to get with it I would like to do it too so keep me in the loop later -Pete

If that is exact it means its a 2.25 inlet but what doesnt make sense is the stock rear muffler/resonator has a dual inlet hmmm.......... any ideas?

Those mufflers won't fit, because the space is made for the stock kinda rectangular muffler. All those are WAY too wide. Look into Turbo series mufflers, which are round and long, similar in shape to that of a stock Catera

How about two of these with some nice tips? http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MPE%2D10416&N=700+4294922710+4294922711+4294891681+4294906132+ 4294791975+115&autoview=sku

or polished http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MPE%2D14416&N=700+4294922710+4294922711+4294891681+4294906132+ 4294791975+115&autoview=sku they have different case lengths from 14 to 22 inches available

or this that is 7 inch wide http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MPE%2D12761&N=700+115&autoview=sku price 87.95 or in chrome for 123.95

I would say last pick is best by the way the stock muffler/resonator in the rear is over 10 inch wide as far as i could measure anyway so 7 inch wide no problem

peetyz, i kept my resonators when i had them removed. i just measured the size of that and it seems to be just under 2". i can post a picture if you want to see for yourself

I see. Id prefer switching up the muffler. But i don't know nobody seems to have a flowmaster installed. Guess it just aint possible.

PEETYZ

Flowmaster is possible but you need a narrow muffler Magnaflow has a good variety of narrow ones now if you want to replace mufflers under middle of car you need single inlet/outlet

i have already done what todd has done its great sounds awsome and drops over 60 pounds id say well my problem is my stock muffler at the rear has a bad rattle i have heard of people srewing a metal screw in to secure loose baffle but i dont know where to start?

I believe you todd you know your stuff i just want to know what size inlet to get for rear muffler it will slide over existing tubing and clamp down so something just over 2inch huh? Just the same set up as rear muffler is now but with new muffler

todd2fst4u

i'd go with 2". your muffler shop will make it work from there

Guess what I'm getting... LS1 GTO stock exhaust!!! For FREE!!! Should be a straightforward swap. We'll find out. I think aftermarket LS1 GTO exhausts should fit as well, as long as they have an outlet on only one side.

GTO exhaust wont work on our cars... they are different and they come out much farther to the side almost behind the wheel then the Cat exhaust. I swapped the Steinmetz muffler on my car and it sounds quiet almost too quiet to the point where you cant tell its even there.. it sounds good if you are sitting from the bumper back.
The steinmetz one was much larger but much shorter too with longer tips which btw dont fit the cat cutout...

I can post some pictures if you guys give me some time... hopefully this weekend...

The GTO exhaust exits to the side but it doesn't have a fuel tank in the rear like the Catera. Also, the mufflers are further forward than the Catera's. You'll need some cutting and welding to make it fit.

The stock Catera exhaust system:

The GTO exhaust system:

There are aftermarket GTO systems that exit ahead of the rear wheels that might work better. Maybe you could cut/weld the freebie system too match.

i just had the first set of mufflers removed and replaced with blank pipes.

Ive been curious about doing this for a while now. When you say the first set, you are talking about the set that is closer to the engine right? When you removed the mufflers did your car throw and check engines? and have you taken it to emmisions since you did that?

10KTGOLD
10-23-07, 05:58 PM
emmisions whats that?

todd2fst4u
10-23-07, 06:01 PM
yes the 2 that are closer to the engine, right after the catalytic converters. no check engine lights. any sensors to trigger lights are before them. they have no effect on that. haven't done anything emmisions related since getting them removed but it wont matter. they dont "filter" any thing out like the catalytic converters. all they do is reduce noise.

like a smog check im assuming

bastards. IL sucks will all their stupid laws. Well emmisions is the only thing thats been holding me back, but if its just a sound reducer, then screw it. Thats gonna be my next project.

yes the 2 that are closer to the engine, right after the catalytic converters. These are the actual mufflers... the end unit is the resonnator.

A while back we had a thread on this... PEETYZ (I think) and I, had good links explaining tyhe difference between muffler and resonator.
