I was just wondering if you guys thought itd be a good idea to paint my caddy flat black. I really dont know how long it would take, I plan on putting on paint thinner then bondo-ing the rust, then putting primer on then finally painting it, the problem is i dont have a paint spray gun, do you think i could get away with just spray cans??

"No."

Nope. Maybe an early '50s Cadillac coupe, but not something as large and substantial as an '86 Brougham.

Flat Black is very forgiving paint. You can make small mistakes and it will look decent when it dries. Not a really good choice for sheet metal though. Looks good on old electronics gear.

unless you are making a rat rod and want a mad max look.... then no.

If your still going to do it,why not rent a sprayer.

What are your plans?

If you actually want it to look good, and don't mind doing a little work... why not try this?

Some friends and I painted a guys '49 Chevy with bituminous septic tank paint using a broom. From far enough away it looked good and black.

yeah, im trying to make it look as good as possible while getting away as cheap as possible, and do you think itd be alright if i did it outdoors or should i find a garage and do it?

no garage needed for $50 paint job.... but covered roof helps from stuff falling on it.

No! That will look ugly, slightly trashy, and rather cheap. Not to be harsh, I just feel strongly about things like this. If you ever get a paintjob worthy of a Cadillac at a later time, they'll just have to strip all that junk off before they can even tackle what you're trying to cover up now.

That Corvair looked pretty damn good in pics. I'm thinking up close, in person, it wouldn't look so great but I am shocked at that photo showing the glossiness of the paint.

Right, no need to ruin a Cadillac with this BS.

96 cents per can at Walmart. You will get carded in Tx cause they know you will sniff the stuff too.

I have found that flat black is hard to remove from my nostrils.

actually if you decided to get a professional paint job in the future, the rustolium paint makes for a really good primer for the new paint.

here is the very origanal thread for the $50 paint job where it all started... the guy goes to extreme detail explaining what he did with lots of pictures, check out the first few pages, most the pictures are linked.

I was/am seriously considering painting my Fleetwood like that, firstly, I don't need to worry about the roof, at all... and it is a fairly easy color... no metallic etc... I just don't have thousands of dollars to spend on a paint job on that car (or any car).... I gotta see, I was able to clean the paint up pretty nice... but I am still thinking about it.

I would seriously recommend the rustoleom route. I'm about to do that to my Custom Cruiser, which will add about a grand to the resale value; based on what it is now.

DO NOT rattle can your Caddy; it will look like a demo derby car!

If you really want to keep your cost down, buy a large bag of charcoal. Apply liberally.

If you want a glossy sheen to it, mix with vaseline.

Haha...then you could call it the "big ol' rollin' turd"

Could you post pictures of the car how it looks right now? I think we'd really like that.

Yeah... Most likely the car will look better and retain better resale if you leave it alone. Once you paint an 80's era Cadillac flat black you pretty much destine it for a future in the junkyard.

I was trying to be nice. My parents taught me some "couth."

LOL

I hope these guys don't take me seriously. I just like to have some fun.

if your gonna do a rattle can, why not do something a little better than flat black? like SEMI GLOSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

here... check this out: i rattle canned my suburban flat black:

http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/2298/dsc00017td0.jpg

but it rusted, so i painted the whole thing rustoleum semi gloss black (rattle can)

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/492/cimg1663dr9.jpg

no matter what color you paint it, paint it with rustoleum (well worth the price) and do it in a well-ventilated garage!

I'd paint it flat black. But then I'd also put flames on it too. :lildevil:
