Accroding to the factory service manual:

Note: The picture shows the screwdriver blade placed right between the bottom of the knob and a small trim piece just below the knob. Blade facing towards the front of the car.

1. Insert a flat bladed tool (screwdriver) between the shift knob and the shift knob trim ring.
2. Rotate the flat bladed tool to release the shift knob trim ring from the shift knob.
3. Tighten the shift knob retaining screw to 2 N-m (18 lb in).

thank-you very much. for those that are interested, since alot of these knobs are loose in the v...

the flat bladed tool goes in the rear (closest to back seat) in between the bottom chrome trim ring on the knob, and the woodgrain trim piece, right where you can see it, in park, sitting in the drivers seat. hence the screwdriver facing the front of the car as onalaska stated.

once you pop the chrom trim ring down off, you can see the torx bolt right there.

i took mine all the way off, and ran electrical tape once around the shaft, slipped it back on and tightened it.

TOOK ALL THE KNOB WIGGLE OUT OF IT...and didn't have to take it back to the dealer again.

Bringing this post back from the dead...

I tried using a screwdriver at the points indicated and just ended up with a dented bottom chrome peice :bonkers:

Anyone who had success popping it off (down) suggest any certain tool or method?

Because I do a lot of work on my vehicles, I invested in a set of non-marring trim removal tools. These are made of plastic and tend to be very gentle on trim parts. Very important when working on the instrument panel, console, shifter, etc. The plastic chrome trim ring does snap into place quite firmly and may be more difficult to pop the first time.

I took mine off when I removed my dash but I've never had a problem with it staying tight since. If you believe it's a case of the set screw loosening (versus a groove developing in the shaft), I'd apply a very small amount of Lock-Tite. Be sure to use the weakest strength (purple if I'm not mistaken - but you best confirm). If you use the wrong type, or apply too much, you will have a heck of a time if it ever has to come off later.

I ended up using a thin flathead (about a quarter inch wide) to pry it down. If i remember correctly, the "clips" are on the right and left sides, not the front and rear. You wont hear them click out of place or anything; for me it was a slow pry.

Did a search of threads and this is the most recent/relevant. The shift knob in my STS is vibrating and making a noise while idling in gear. Is this the fix to stop the noise?

I just did this today with my STS. It had been loose and rattling since I bought it and it was driving me nuts. Used a nylon pry bar on the backside of the chrome ring and it snapped down but took a surprising amount of force before it released. Tighten up the set screw and voila! Not loose or rattling anymore!
