I have read that in some places the 4.6 NS is 279 cubic inches and I read other places that they are 281 cubic inches. Please tell me which is right. thanks TexasCadillac

Yes, buit it is backwards math.

Is a 5.0L a 305 or a 302?

I don't wanna harp on the same string in here but when doing convertions you should not straight the numbers here .
For instance : Northstar is 4565 cm3 ,if you say 4.6 you can still find the right number but not as exact as what you evalute 4565
So, according to the calculator 4,565 liter is equal to 278,511 cubic . Still right if you say 279 ;)

If you say 4,6 liter to cubic then the number is 280,646 which you can say 281

I did some calculating years ago and I usually use 61.02, but the real conversion is: 61.0237 cu. in. = 1 liter.
That would put a 4.6 at approximately 280.70902 cu. in., personally I would round that up.
However... there could be some rounding up or down going on and 2 cubic inches isn't really that much difference.
I'd say in the end, when all is said and done... why does it matter?

+ or - 2 cubic inches is not going to turn it into a AAFuel. 280 is close enough for ditchwork. Now, lets go back and remeasure all American V-8's so we can know which manufacturers used number specs in their advertising..........Metrics gets us decimal people into all sorts of trouble. Besides, 280 or 455 cu.in. sounds better than 4.6 or 7.5 liters.

It was no big deal I just throw it out. I have to use a calculator for everything. So I looked up the displacement calculator and yes I could have added cc and deck height.

Isn't "displacement" calculated on the swept volume of the cylinder, regardless of deck height or combustion chamber volume? (i.e. bore & stroke used to calculate the actual cylinder volume)
