I have an 81 CDV with the buick 4.1 V6. How do you extract the error codes? This has a much different connector under the dash (only 5 pins). I've tried shorting two at a time out, and never get a check engine light flash.

Holding Off and Warmer on the ECC panel gives you the ". ." or "- -" Readout, but you never get the "88." Perhaps this only works on EFI models?

The check engine light is off, but it did come on while driving and go out again. This has only happened once, but I'm curious as to what it could have been.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think only the DEFI models had the onbaord diagnostic using the ECC panel. I know that there is a service supplement for the 4.1 V6 for the model years that used them. Have you tried a code reader?

No, I have not tried a code reader. It's a strange plug, as I said. 5 pins. I'm sure the code reader at work would have the adapter, I'll have to check.

I just figured there was some way to do it with flashing the check engine light.

You short 2 pins together. It's an original Compuker Command Corntrol system.
Read the Czeck engine lamp flashes. Ignition key must be in run for it to work.

Yeah, that's what I thought. However, I've tried shorting together just about every possible combination of the pins, and get nowhere. My 84 Olds had a 307 with the CCC system, before I changed it to a 350. You could get the codes to flash the check engine light by shorting two pins together like you say. I've done it many times. This one seems to do nothing.

Maybe the connector I'm using is the wrong one (?). It's under the ashtray in the middle of the dash. Is there a different connector elsewhere?
