View Full Version : Driver side mirror hit....

Was on a narrow winding street (Kelly Drive for those in Philly) where I had my driver side mirror hit by a SUV coming in the other direction. Luckily, the body wasn't sideswiped. Only the glass in the mirror shattered and popped out. The connectors are the only thing that prevented the mirror from falling to the street. The way traffic was moving, I couldn't stop or there would have been an accident.
Of course, I need to replace. Any idea what it's going to run me to get fixed? I think if I buy the part somewhere (I know the dealer will charge me a an arm and a leg), I should be able to fix it myself. Has this happened to anyone in the forum/ if yes, how did you get it fixed? :banghead:
I don't know what damage was met by the other driver but I hope his was worse than mine!!!!!

I'd look at ebay to find a decent price. Connect the wiring and you should be good. I believe you need to take the cover, small piece, off inside the door to bolt back in.

I disconnected the wiring so it wouldn't be hanging off. I'll check e-bay. I've changed parts before but it seemed strange I didn't see any screws or clips the actual mirror would be connected to the shell.
Plus some oil/grease came out and sprayed the side of the door panel. I'll figure it out. I'm not that pissed as it could have been a lot worse damage.
Thanks.

Make sure you wipe that liquid off you truck or else its going to stain. I had the same thing happen to me. I bought a replacement heated mirror on ebay for $40 that took care of the problem. The stains form the liquid were a PITA to take off since I didnt bother to clean it up right when it happened.

I paid a ridiculous amount at the dealership when mine was damaged by someone on my street. I would have looked around for a deal but I had to leave to go back to college the next day. I'm sure Lindsay Cadillac will have a fair price.

SAME THING here. I was a little tipsy when i backed my truck into the garage and cracked the mirror. Didn't know stuff had leaked out of it till the next day. And i had to have it wet sanded out.
Ebay mirror for $60 i think.

If the fluid from the mirror (self dimming) gets on the paint it will etch into the paint, I know this because someone broke my 03' drivers miorror, the fluid leaked on the door, I had to wet sand to remove the damage. You can get just the glass from the dealer, because it's heated, self dimming and has the turn signal in it the cost was like $175.00, at the time there was nothing on E-Bay or any local junk yards so I paid the price. :(

I would say go to the yellow pages and look up a junk yard. You can probally get one dirt cheap.

Thanks for the replies. Just got back from the dealer and should have brought some damn vaseline! They wanted $336.29 Part #88944391.
Will weigh all my options before going back to them. Also, I'm heading out right now to get that damn oil off the best I can. It appears to be flaking off but from what I hear with other folks, I need to get it off now.... Will also see what's on Ebay. If anyone comes across some good info in getting the part at a decent price, my ears are open....Thanks

Went to a car wash and no luck with getting the fluid remnents off the paint. it's already streaked.
I assume a auto detail shop will be able to do this "wet sand" job as previously mentioned?

That is what they will have to do, I had no luck with any polishes and had to wet sand. :(

Would using a clay bar work on something like this?

Usually not because it etches into the clear coat, the clay bar will remove surface debris

As I plan on going down the East Coast tomorrow, had to break down and get the part from the dealer. Couldn't find the exact part in the short time I had. The only good thing, the caddy dealer didn't have the part and sent me to the chevy dealer down the road. They had the same part for $60 cheaper. Thanks caddy. Was able to install in 5 minutes and all works fine.
When I get back I'll deal with the fluid/paint issue from the broken glass.....

What type of sand paper would be best to use for the oil removal? And is it pretty tuff to get out while doing this?
Thanks

You get it from auto body shops or auto body supply stores, I used 2000 and 1500 grit and you want to do it wet. You maybe better off taking it to a body shop or good detail shop, or you maybe painting it. :)
