I once asked someone the difference between the deVille and the Brougham, and the answer came back that the deville had the straight edge rear door and the Brougham had the angle edged rear door.
I've stripped out two Sedan deVilles and they both had the angled rear doors. I have seen deVilles with the straight edged doors. So I wonder, was the door style optioned? Please, enlighten me.

Hello.

What model years are you woundering about.

The only years that Brougham have been a model name by it self was between 1986 to 1992 and those years was it pretty much that seperated a DeVille from a Brougham.
for example RWD vs FWD body on frame vs not body on frame, lenght, a sleaker front on the DeVille,
The rear door angles on the DeVille over the years I don't remember, The brougham havent changed just anything over those years.

I thought the brougham had an extra trim of chrome around the rockers.

When talking '77-'79 the DeVille and Fleetwood Brougham ARE on the same chassis, same car, and yes, the rear door window frames ARE angled (I don't like the look)

When talking 80's RWD DeVille vs Brougham, then there were a few year to year changes with placement of chrome/stainless trim etc...

Yes, I should clarify that. I'm talking 1977 - 1979 body styles, and yes the Brougham and the deVille did share the same platform. What I'm trying to address is the rear door shape. I've never seen the straight edged door on the Brougham but have seen both style rear doors on the deVilles. :hmm: Explanation?

Okay, the brougham only came in the 4 door style, DeVilles came in coupes and sedans.

The "straight-edged" doors didn't appear until 1980.

That's why it's harder to tell the difference between a D-body and B-body before 1980. Caprices, etc from the 80-90s still have the 70's look.

Fleets, Park Avenues, and 98s were the only d-bodies, right??

Nope nope, the only D Bodies were the 77-84 deVille and 77-96 Brougham. The Impalas, Caprices, Parisiennes, Ninety Eights, Eighty Eights, LeSabres, Electras, Roadmasters, Custom Cruisers and pre '82 Bonnevilles were all B Bodies.

Chad, I thought the 77-84 Olds 98 and Buick Electra were on the "C" platform? It seems odd to me, as you claim, the shorter wheelbase and smaller Caprice/Catalina/88/LeSabre were on the same platform as the big 98/Electra. Dave

Now wait, BRICKS offered me his 1979 deVille and it had the square rear doors.

Yes, all my Brougham's do. I think one of my deVilles did but, it may have been added by the previous owner.

The two deVilles I stripped out had the drum rear brakes. The Broughams, all have the rear disc brakes.

On this thread I'm trying to find out about the difference in the rear door styles.

After thinking about it more, and doing some research, I found out that I was wrong about that. The Ninety Eights and Electras are on a 118.9 inch wheelbase, and the Lesabre/Eighty Eight/Caprice/Parisienne were on a 115.9 inch wheelbase...so it was indeed a bit smaller, but as far as I know, they were all B Bodies. I don't think the first C body came out until 1985, and that was the FWD Electra and Ninety Eight and possibly deVille.
