View Full Version : 472 or 500??

I am in the thinking stages of a new project. I want to put a big Caddy engine into a 72 Pinto.

I have been reading a little on the two engines but have not found any real numbers on them yet. I know they changed over the years with heads and intakes but what are some real world HP/Torque numbers for them? Over all size?

I am pretty sure I can find either size here in Los Angeles but will the 472 put out around the same Torque as a 500? I dont want to build a race engine and have always heard about how reliable the big caddys were.

This must be right:

Engine type V-8 Overhead valves.
Cast iron block
Displacement 500 cubic inches
Bore & stroke 4.300 x 4.304 inches
Compression ratio 10.0:1
Brake horsepower (SAE gross)400 @ 4400 rpm
Torque 550 @ 3000 rpm
Oil pressure 34-40 psi
Main bearings five
Valve lifters Hydraulic
Carburetor Rochester four-barrel Quadrajet model 4MV (Eldorado type)

Engine type Overhead valves.
Cast iron block Five main bearings.
Hydraulic valve lifters
Displacement 472 cubic inches (7.7 litres)
Bore and stroke 4.30 x 4.06 inches (109 mm x 103 mm)
Compression ratio 10.0:1
Brake horsepower 375 at 4400 rpm
Torque 525 ft. lbs @ 3000 rpm
Oil pressure35-40 psi

the 472 going to be easier to find and you won't notice all that much differance between the two

The numbers that vanaisa posted above are for the 1970 models. After '70 the compression dropped and more emissions equipment was put on the motors which in turn, lowered the power. The way motors were rated was also changed from gross to net which made it look like the power dropped even more.
I have the physical dimensions of the 472/500 somewhere. I'll post them as soon as I find them.

Yes, those specs are 472cid 1968 - 1971. In 72, they decreased power - golden ages were over....
