View Full Version : traction control light on Hansen96STS 09-21-07, 12:48 AM Hi,
I've got a 96 Seville STS. The traction control light comes on then at times goes off. I've checked the Plugs at the wheels nothing seems bad there. the plugs inside the engine compartment seem fine also.
I pulled up the codes and found that when the light is on TCS says " no TCS data". Apparently I have a disconnection somewhere? But intermiitently. More on than off. The other codes showing current are PCM, pc1571 and pc1602, PZM, pz2042, RSS, rs0038. When TCS is reading it shows tc0072,tc0073 and tc 0077. All I have is the hanes book which which doesn't give a break down of all the codes. Just wondering does anyone have any knowledge as to what these codes mean. pc 1602 and pz 2042 affect the light more directly. Help would be appreciated. submariner409 09-21-07, 08:37 PM All codes are deciphered in the links at the top of the various thread pages. Look for "Got codes.....", search, and run off a copy......... Hansen96STS 09-24-07, 04:05 PM Thanks for the help,
Still no real description for the two 2 letter 4 number in dash read out but I'm getting closer. TCS I know is traction control system but the four digit number code I have no Idea. Example TC 0077 or the PZM PZ 2042. Maybe I'll plug my OBD II reader in and see what it shows. Not sure what to do. submariner409 09-24-07, 04:59 PM  Somewhere in all these threads there must be lists of code meanings.....barring that, there are some options. Buy the Helm FSM (Factory Service Manual)(EBay), subscribe to Alldatadiy.com, or get in line to thread or PM AJxtcman, our in-house GM mole (who must be partly squirrelly by now...). Thanks for the help,

Your year of car was the first production year for the OBDII standard. And unfortunately it was a rough transition period for trouble codes.
What has since become a familiar one letter followed by four numbers (P1111 for example) was, in early 1996 model year production, a mixture of OBDI standards and the baby steps of OBDII standards.
Using only the four numbers in your codes yields this comparison from an OBDII DTC list;
0077 - Left Front/Driver SIS Malfunction
2042 - no match
What would help you the most is a copy of the factory service manual for 1996 or someone who can translate / interpret the blend of OBDI and OBDII standards. Hansen96STS 11-15-07, 01:34 PM Well I purchased a service manual. What a help! The thing now as I have studied it through is. I read in the forum here that a person had somewhat the same problem I'm experiencing. They replaced the ignition switch (mounted on the steering column) and it fixed the problem. Asking around about this problem I was given the heads up by a guy at Auto Zone he told me the same thing, that a guy he knows that is a mechanic at a shop across the street has found this problem many times and it seems to lie in a worn and faulty ignition switch. I'm noticing that the trouble codes I'm getting seem to be all communication malfunctions. Would that be the direction I should be leaning the ignition switch. With exception of the RS-0038 code. But It maybe it's affected also. It seems less likely to me.
TC-0072: PZM serial data line malfunction,
TC-0073: PCM EBTCM(electronic brake and traction control module) TCS interface malfunction,
TC-0077: PZM serial data line malfunction.
most of the time I get a "NO TCS DATA".
PC-1571:Traction control system-PWM circuit no fequency.
PC-1602: Loss of EBTCM(electronic brake and traction control module) serial data.
PZ-2042: Loss of serial communicationsTCS/ABS.
This code seems it might be separate from the others but not sure.
RS-0038: ELC exhaust valve short to ground/open circuit. GRANDDADDYBEAR 11-19-07, 11:41 PM Hello There
Another New Guy Here Needing Help!
My Name Is Andrew And My Caddy Is A 1996 Sts And My Problem Is Similer To Whats Being Discussed, But Not Exactly!
My Car Starts Out Ok With The Service Traction Control Light Out And It Runs Like A Raped Ape, Then The Svc Tc Light Comes On And I Loose Power. It Happens At Different Times And Distances. This Is Relativly New Devlopment.
I Dont Know If Tis Related But Eversince Ive Had The Ca (about 5 Years) If You Turn The Trac. Contr. Button To The Off (smoke The Tire) Position The Car Would Become Meekid Instead Of Rabbid Like It Should.
I Have No Codes Or Manual I Was Hopeing That Somebody Reconized The Symptons And Would Be Able To Tell Me What It Sonded Like!
Thank You
Andrew
Aka Granddaddybear dont_blink 11-25-07, 03:29 AM Sounds like a bad wheel speed sensor. 95 cadski 12-28-07, 02:07 PM Hi guy's, I'm a new member to the site and have been experiening a similar problem with my 95 STS. Remember my 95 STS has no traction control botton, its always armed amd ready to engage, therfore I've lost all my bottom end and seem to have been getting horrible gas my milage ever since this has happend. This problem ocurred one day when I started the car to go to work. First the light was off and then it came on and stayed on. Sometimes it would go out after each restart but then come on again. More recently the light has stayed on and won't go off no matter how may times I restart the car. Then all of a sudden when the temperature gets very cold the light won't come on for the first 20 minutes of driving after start up. I've replaced the front left hub which is where I'm having the problem. I still get a code that says Frnt lft receiving no continuity. I've checked the wiring going from the hub to the plug under the hood. They all seem fine. I'm completely frustrated and tired of getting horrible fuel economy. Can someone please advise me on what to do.
Oh, did I forget to mention that the car currently has 407,000km with all its original drivetrain, no rebuilt components of any kind. I love this car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreaciated
Thanks,
Haney M.
95 cadski '94 Len 02-05-08, 09:15 PM I just joined today but this site has served me very well. Iwas getting data loss codes for traction and ride control, air bag etc. and found on this site that a failure in the dash cluster was causing it all. If you keep checking you will find the site tells you how to pinpoint it with hair dryer and freeze spray, they also told me how to take cluster out of '94 Seville. Its easy once someone steers you in the right direction. Mr Whizard is the place for fix and help. | |
