What does it mean when it sometimes is lit and sometimes not. When I start the car, a Seville STS -97, it sometimes indicates and sometimes not. Why?
Don't have the proper manual yet (will get it soon I hope).

Tina Well, it's a problem that comes and goes. Your car stores active and history codes. Those will tell you what would have activated the light. If you post the codes it has stored, someone here can help you with what they mean. Do a forum search for accessing codes, and post what you find.

Hi

I just bought a '93 Seville STS and I have similar (and worse...) problems.

The light "Service engine soon" appears regularly, but sometimes it does not appear when I start the car but only after a few minutes of driving.
Don't know what it means exactly, the manual says :
"A computer monitors operation of your fuel, ignition and emission control systems. This light should come on when the ignition is on, but the engine is not running, as a check to show you it is working. If it does not come on at all, have it fixed right away. If it stays on, or it comes on while you are driving, the computer is indicating that you have a problem. You should take your vehicle in for service soon."

Now the other problems : after a little longer of driving (about 15-20 min), a whole bunch of messages appear suddenly ! They are :
CHECK BRAKE FLUID
The manual says :
"This message is displayed to inform the driver that the brake reservoir
fluid level is low. Check the brake reservoir level and add as needed.
Have the brake system serviced by a Cadillac technician as soon as
possible. If the brake warning light is on, follow the directions in that
section."

-> but I checked and the brake fluid level is good !

and :
TRACTION DISABLED
The manual says :
"If your vehicle is equipped with Traction Control, this message will be
displayed if a problem is noted in the Traction Control System. Have your
vehicle serviced as soon as possible."

This I don't know if it is a systems malfunction or if there is really an issue ...

Anyway I believe it is more related to the electronics malfunction but then I would not like to miss a known issue with this car...
The version is the 4.6l Northstar.

If anyone has a clue on this it would be really helpful !

Thanks,
Cedric

I had the same thing happen on 2 occasions.

First code Check Brake fluid: This was as a result of my brake pads being low. Check the fluid level again and if you see that it is low (under the lip) it might be the brakes.

Tarction disabled: This happened twice; first time had lights ABS\ & Traction disabled. This was because the sensor was unplugged in the rear. The second time was a result of the note i posted before.
