View Full Version : If Buying an 08 CTS, you're filthy rich or crazy!!! BrianB13 07-26-07, 02:43 AM This is a redesigned car and yes it's under warranty but who knows what might be wrong with it (i.e., design defects). These Caddys lose a lot of value over the first 36 months. I never buy a new car. Usually lease returns. My 2004 CTS had a sticker price of 45K - it has it all. I just puchased it for 22k w/28K miles and it looks like new with a perfect interior and no, dents, dings or sratches whatsoever on the exterior. Only a little road rash on two wheels. You are just about guaranteed that Cadillac will not be giving any deals on the 08 models for quite some time and may charge over sticker. I also looked at a 2006 CTS-V with 9K miles for 25K!! hen a found out how much more the insurance was. But if you and/or your family are filthy rich, then go for it!! Wrestler07 07-26-07, 02:57 AM are you drunk, dumb, or just looking for a fight on this board? vireXtyle 07-26-07, 05:51 AM are you drunk, dumb, or just looking for a fight on this board?

Its not news... its not particular to the Cadillac brand or specific model you chose...
Its pretty much standard depreciation on most automobiles..(excluding some cars but its pretty much across the industry)
The advantage of buying a new car is you get to enjoy a brand new product made for you. It should theorically (sp) have no issues and you get to break the car in the way you want.
If the car is smokin hot like the new CTS then you get to have at the moment you drive it off the latest and greatest. Sometimes that feeling supercedes the loss of value that a buyer would get when they buy a 3 year old car.
Which is the right way to go? Buy a 3 year old preowned car or a new one can both be right. Just depends on the individuals frame of mind and his or her particular financial situation.
Although a lot of attention is being paid to the new 2008 CTS I can assure you that a 3 year old CTS is considered a great car and you should enjoy the ownership experience. I won't kid you though and tell you the same about the CTS V because being a corvette owner myself I tend to really like the fact the CTS V had a corvette motor.
Thats an even more kick @ss ride than the standard CTS yet thats exactly what the manufacturer had in mind when they produced it.
I can't help but wonder what excitment hits the board when the new 2009 CTS V hits. Wish I could wait for one as thats going to be an even more impressive vehicle. Rumor is it will replace the 300hp motor with a 500 or 600 hp motor to once again wow the automotive world.
The new CTS is awesome. The new CTS V coming in 2008 will be even more so. I guess thats the nature of the automotive world.
Peace out!

The V has the LS6 or LS2 motor, 400 BHP stock. The Tony Show 07-26-07, 08:42 AM Ah yes....I've been waiting for this. The same thing that happened in the Escalade forum- A big group of insecure people who are mad that their car will no longer be the "current" design, and so they start talking about how ugly the new one is, how much better they like their current one, and how stupid everyone is for buying the new one.
Jealousy in an ugly thing, my friend. The '08 is an awesome ride, but there's no need to throw stones at it to cover up your own insecurity about now driving an "outdated" car. Lord Cadillac 07-26-07, 08:52 AM JB explained it perfectly. Sure, the new CTS is going to cost more than a used one - and it may have some first year issues - but you've got the latest and greatest.. For some people, this is the way to go. For some, it's not...
With the Escalade crew, I'm not sure it's "always" jealousy.. In my case, I REALLY like my 05 ESV. I'm not crazy about the less-edgy look of the 07. I actually like the looks of mine better. However, the interior is much nicer in the new Escalade.. If I was given a choice of a Free Escalade, 05 or 07, of course I'd take the 07 - it just makes sense. But I really like my 05 better...
I hope the NEXT Escalade is more edgy and far more different than the Tahoe and Suburban - which I constantly mistake for an Escalade at various angles... Wrestler07 07-26-07, 09:33 AM Hey Brian enjoy your 2004. I'll be enjoying my 2007 and stealing looks at every 2008 that I see. Zymurgy 07-26-07, 10:38 AM Maybe I'm "filthy rich", maybe I'm a little "crazy" too. Regardless, I have an '08 on order and can't wait to start enjoying it (even thought it will be my wife's daily driver).
Note to Brian... I'll be enjoying it for at least 3 more years than you will. I find a lot of value in that. Also, I really doubt that most dealers will be putting a market adjustment on the new CTS. In fact, my dealer is accepting my GMS discount which will save me about $5,500 off MSRP. like more here say: that's the case for all new releases. I don't worry about any production faults in this first release. It is a design and engineering that is based on the first CTS line. The engine has been improved and the interior has been improved.
Compared to other brands: even Mercedes and BMW have more and more problems in their new cars... hearing from their owners makes me feel good driving a Cadillac! tommy compton 07-26-07, 01:07 PM i agree with him in some respects, i'll never buy new, not because i can't but because i'd rather buy a fully loaded lease end for 10-20g's less, thats just me. not that i would knock anyone for buying new. damn if you got the cash i say do it. just know in two years i'll be driving the same car for alot cheaper. Flyin-Ryan 07-26-07, 01:45 PM I'll be buying used for a few more years of my life but there really is something nice about buying that brand new car. 5 miles on the odometer, new car smell, and no one has ever dropped a fry between the seat.
No one is stupid for either route. There are advantages to both I am not filthy rich nor do I consider myself crazy, but I will more than likely buy a 2008 CTS.
I feel bad for people who let saving a dollar or two dictate their lives. You only get one shot on this planet and all that money you save cannot go with you beyond here. Never let money make you miss out on living.
When I am on my deathbed I will remember that day I drove that new shiney Cadillac out of the dealer and to its new home.
Enjoy life and if you want a new car, buy a new car. loanofficer 07-26-07, 04:20 PM I love my 05 and I think at the end of the lease I am going to buy it out rite and then also lease the new one.. I think the CTS is a hot car and you can do soo much to it... I just hope u can change the grill on the new ones... anyone have any pics of the new CTS with an after market grill, well I suppose none are out yet... but enjoy I'll be buying used for a few more years of my life but there really is something nice about buying that brand new car. 5 miles on the odometer, new car smell, and no one has ever dropped a fry between the seat.

That's the only reason to buy a new car, the smell. Nothing else like new car smell in all of automotivedome. That's the only reason to buy a new car, the smell. Nothing else like new car smell in all of automotivedome.
New car smell is nice.
It is also nice to know it has not been tainted by previous owners. :bouncy: no tellin what the previous owner did in the back seat... Zymurgy 07-26-07, 05:59 PM no tellin what the previous owner did in the back seat...
... or what their dogs/children did on the seats. bigblockcadillac 07-26-07, 06:08 PM :tsucks:
Sounds like someone is having a bad day. I can see responding to someone with this argument within a thread, but to start a new thread ranting and raving comes off like bitterness and jealous. Who wouldn't want a new CTS? I would, but I wouldn't want to absorb that immediate depreciation.
To all the soon-to-be 08 CTS owners --congratulations, please post those pics once you pick it up. I will admire it, not give you sh*t for it. cossie1msu 07-26-07, 06:10 PM Hey Brian when you buy my lease out enjoy what I did to the car.....oh wait you wouldn't know maybe I hit a pole and covered it up really well. bigblockcadillac 07-26-07, 06:16 PM Hey Brian when you buy my lease out enjoy what I did to the car.....oh wait you wouldn't know maybe I hit a pole and covered it up really well.

Any accidents that you didn't report to your insurance and DMV wouldn't appear, but if they were reported they should show up on carfax. Trust me, you're not the first person to hide accidents and damage to your vehicle from the insurance company. Yeah my wifes Jetta was wrecked twice once it was 4000 bucks worth of damage, the insurance company knew and it still didn't show up on car fax. I told the new owner about it though.
I tell you I love a new car, but I hate the payments. Everything I have now is paid for. Plus I can't really replace the Trans Am. Coming up on 8 years old and just over 42,000 miles.

They were all filed with my insurance company. As I understand it, it is the responsibility of the body shop to log the repairs. Almost none of them do. And I went to all legit, mainstream body shops that were preferred with Allstate, State Farm, Farmers, etc. I am not hiding anything. My point is that body shops simply dont report it 99% of the time unless a car gets totalled. 8 years 42000!!! That's hardly even broken in!
I hear ya on the Camaro. Awesome. Truly awesome. I have never liked any Camaros before, and I am not into retro styling. But I love the 2009 Camaro.
I like new cars too, but just not worth it when you can typically buy one that's a year or two old, with less than 20k miles, for 50-70% of new.
BTW, I really like this Camaro:

I have about 15,000 saved up. I plan on keep the Trans Am, it sees some track time.
I have had new cars in the past. 04 Silverado, 98 Z28, 01 Z28, 96 Z8, 94 Z28. I just get used stuff now. I think I may even wait a year or two for the new Camaro.
I believe it is sharing the CTS platform.
I drove up to Canada to see it in person, so nice...
There was a brand new CTS as well.
I really like it in person.

Jealousy in an ugly thing, my friend. The '08 is an awesome ride, but there's no need to throw stones at it to cover up your own insecurity about now driving an "outdated" car.
You missed the point. The point is simple economics. American cars lose their value quickly so all I'm saying is that as soon as you drive a 08 CTS from the dealer, you just lost a few thousand dollars in value. I could care less about the new body style as I'm selling my CTS anyway and going foriegn. The same could be said for buying an 07 right now. The other point is that new models tend to have design flaws. The 84 Corvette is a prime example of this as it had numerous suspension issues. Flyin-Ryan 07-27-07, 07:36 PM Everyone knows that a new car drops in value greatly once its left the lot.
Enjoy your foriegn car The only cars that dont drop in value like a stone is Lexus. A few Honda's and Toyota's, but that's it. Everything else, foreign and domestic, lose fast fast. And if you are in a big market like Chicago, where everyone wants new, they all lose value even faster.
So, buy a car, and drive it into the ground. mbiker97 07-27-07, 10:40 PM I also looked at a 2006 CTS-V with 9K miles for 25K!!

moral: buy what makes you happy Planediveguy 07-29-07, 06:56 AM Bought my ride brand new. It has 30K on it and almost 2 years and still smells like new ( noting like conditioning your leather every other week..)
I will be driving it for at least another 3 years.... and won't give a damn how much it will have depreciated.
I do like the design of the cuurrent CTS better than the new one... but that will change as I see the new one more and more in the streets. It is just normal and no, I am not insecure. The current model CTS with its sharp lines and edgy look differentiates from everything on the road. The new model is awesome in the way that has many upgrades, but it lost the design edge in order to appease to a broader customer base.
If you really want to get a better deal buying the car used or new:
www.carbuyingtips.com RightTurn 07-29-07, 11:43 AM ALL new cars depreciate when driven off the dealer lot. Even the Lexus and Toyotas. If you don't believe that, go buy a new Lexus and then try to sell it, ahahaha. Anyhow, the new vs used arguments all have merit; as others have said it is a matter of personal preference and economics. I love new vehicles and since I'm making the payments I'll pretty much do as I please. Since my CTS is only 10 months old I won't be buying the '08, but there may be an '09 with my name on it. You live ONCE; go for it. :highfive: According to the new Motortrend mag, the new 08's will be in the low to mid 30 range. Hardly have to be rich let alone filthy rich to afford one. The 08's are very nice looking and have a much better looking interior than the 1st gen. Fact is, the new cts will out perform the old in may ways. Sounds like your just hating on it. This has to be one of the most ridiculous threads at Cadillac Forums.
As the saying goes: "Never argue with an idiot. He'll take you down to his level, and then beat you with experience".
While some folks will undoubtedly wait for depreciation to set in (or magically, a great deal to come along) to get themselves into a 2008, 2009, or 2010 CTS, others such as myself will be entirely enjoying the new car, in the here and now.
Anyway, to each his own.
To those who feel obligated to wait (and wait) for whatever reason, the attached is a little reminder of what they'll be missing along the way.
Cheers
