I love how the volant gives my 3.6L that growl it didnt have before...
i just took the cover off my volant & went for a spin... it sounds so much stronger with the lid off!!

what i wanna know is:
1. Is it harmful to the intake/filter/car to leave the Lid off?
2. Will i get additional more sound if i cut out a square in the front of the volant in addition to leaving the top off?
3. If it is harmful to keep the lid off, is it harmful to cut out the square in the front of the intake box?
4. Will just cutting out the piece in the box give me the same grumble as just taking the lid off?
5. Will i lose any power by removing the lid?

TIA :)

i just took the cover off my volant & sat on it while my buddy reved the engine ... it feels so much stronger with the lid off!!

When you remove the lid you allow a lot of hot air to enter the engine. It's not as dense with oxygen. There are also toxin crap stirring around that can be caustic and abrasive to your engine. I wouldn't do it. Something similar to luv's could work as long as you make sure your getting cool outside air.

Most people outside the CTS world just have a cone filter with no problems. You'll be fine

i called up volant performance... they said its okay to leave the lid off, but couldnt tell me if i would loose/gain HP ...

The engine only sucks in as much air as it needs. Pulling the cover off only turns your cold air intake into a hot air intake, defeating the purpose. While open cone filters look cool under the hood, they're NOT cold air intakes by definition. Colder air is more dense (more air for the same volume) and equals more power when you need it (WOT). If you actually measure it on a dyno, you will likely see a slight power loss, but it will be single digits most likely. Somehow, I think if making your car louder is the goal, power is likely not, so why worry?

If you're looking for more growl you should add the Corsa exhast and leave your Volant the way it is. I agree with the others who suggest cutting a hole will turn your CAI into a HAI, I certainly wouldn't do it, but thats me and you're you. At the end of the day whatever floats your boat is up to you.

With all this cutting you could have just got a K&N :thepan:

Add an exhaust......I have the V exhaust with my intake and it sounds like a mean tiger when idling.....when I get on it...people get that taco bell syndrome from my car....as their neck whips around to see whats making that ferocious growl :D :D

ody, k i'm gonna put the lid back on...
will cutting the hole in the front of the intake box make me lose hp/torque as well?

Toxic crap?
The CTS does not have a 1943 Tank engine Bob :D

anyway, I rather put some extra padding in the volant to make it more quiet.

No but it's loaded with lotsa of heated plastic and rubber emitting gases. Not nearly as good as cool fresh air from outside the engine bay.

You mean the weak makers? I thought most of the synthetic under there is thermo set. If it would be a plast, then it would melt from the engine heat.

anyway, here's for the Cadillac growl:

If you leave the cover off, you're certainly going to hurt power slightly from drawing in hot air. If you instead cut a hole in the front (air from outside of the hot engine bay), it can't hurt, although later reselling a Volant with a big hole in it may prove tricky.

I can't imagine it would produce any more power, but it will likely increase the noise slightly. The function of an airbox is two-fold: to act as a muffler for the intake system, and to provide a path of colder outside air. The current slot shaped hole in the Volant is roughly 2" x 6", which is more area than the MAF will flow (~3" ID). The slot is not the restriction, especially, since the normal intake path (hole in the fender) is also still utilized with the Volant. The K&N offers a bigger filter, but the Volant's filter has more surface area and lower restriction than the stock filter already.

IMHO, the best of all would be to adapt a larger filter (like the K&N) into the Volant (or TonyA modified stock) airbox.

some people were saying that the lid on the volant was getting sucked inwards, if thats the case there must be some restriction in the air flow of the box????

Yup, that's why some have added an additional hole to draw cool air from the otherside of the radiator. Pretty easy mod.:)

today, i pulled the intake, cut out a nice square, maybe 5x5 in the front of it & sanded the edges a little bit to tiddy up + the Lids back on.

I'm gonna take it for a spin later to butt dyno it.

Kid,
Does your hole access the front of the radiator? If not, your sucking hot air.:(

i love the sound, this way i was able to put the lid back on as Ody told me, & kept the roar.

honestly, i cant notice much difference in performance, then again, how much HP does it take to notice a difference by butt dyno? and how much HP/TQ are u expecting to get by cutting a hole in the front of an intake box? lol.

I gotta perfect the pathway to the opening tomorrow.
Currently, i cut the rubber fla[ that was in front of the rectangular opening already in the Volant & totally removed the rubber piece that was between the Intake box & the back of the headlight(area). I may put that piece back & just cut out the same pattern i have on the Intake box onto the Rubber flap.

overall, i'm content :)
