: Now I get to jump on the Japanese SUV bandwagon.

So I mentioned in an other thread I'm going up to North Dakota this weekend with my dad and my little brother to visit my great uncle and his family. I wanted to drive up in my car, but since it's gonna be so hot (95-97*) and I've got an original radiator, coolant hoses and my car's been somewhat low on coolant recently, I asked to see if we could take my mom's '05 Toyota Highlander instead, seeing as how that's only got like 19,000 on it, and it's still under Toyota's warranty (not like we'd need it :bigroll: ) I admit, I'd much rather take my car, but with the heat, the long drive, the humidity, etc etc, I'm kinda leery about it. So it'll be interesting to see the how an SUV actually is behind the wheel, on the freeway for about 6 hours.

I'd love to shed forgiveness on you, but I'm driving a Honda now. :hide:

Bump....Bump.........Bump......................Bum p

In all actuality, the ride probably won't be that bad, probably nothing like a Land Cruiser or a Tahoe or something. Just try not to become a sheep while you drive.

We rented a 2007 Highlander from Enterprise when we went to PA to visit my girlfriend's grandfather. It was so simple and plain inside (entry level model), and did not have power for the PA mountains. It will never let you down though, and with good maintenance, you can get over 250K miles out of that 3.3 liter.

We bought my girlfriend a Infiniti QX4 as her daily driver last September. It is nice and the 3.5 liter has some good power for a SUV. It did fantastic this last winter in Chicago. It has every option from Xenons to heated seats, moonroof, and Navi. Not bad for $14K.. and it was FAR better than the $19K SRX and $16K Envoy we were looking at. I put those 17X8.5 AT Italia wheels and Goodyear rubber on it ;)

Wow, a QX4... Something we actually agree on!

QX4's due to depreciation (and only the 2001 and up 3.5's) are one of the best used SUV buys out there. They have All time and low range gearing available, solid unit body construction, and definitely a cut above the Pathfinder LE on the luxury scale, especially with the HIDs and the available Navigation system and wood on the wheel rim. Its a solid truck, Ive *almost* bought one a few times.

Those wheels look really nice, but at first I thought they were take-offs from the Pathfinder, they look real similar to one of the pathfinder wheel designs.

As far as the highlander, its more of a Camry on stilts than an SUV, just like its brother the RX350. Should ride real nice.

I've ridden in this before, I mean she's had the vehicle for over two years, but I've only driven it once, and that was for like 30 minutes. The ride is quite smooth for an SUV, but then again it is like Stoney said, a Camry on stilts. The seats are pretty firm, but from what I've experienced, they're quite comfortable on trips, and the backseat legroom is more than ample (I think it's like 39 inches).

I've kinda been giving thought to buying an SUV (96-99 Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade) at some point so it'll be kinda cool to see what an SUV is like on the highway for long trips...riding higher, more wind noise, etc etc. And it's funny, my mom's Highlander is specced out like those Tahoes I like...power driver's seat, sunroof, manual climate control, in dash CD player, full center console, etc etc. So it'll kinda (and I use that word loosely) be like driving one of those, except they ride higher and rougher, and suck more gas.

Her's is a dark blue with a grey cloth (or should I call it "fabric" :bigroll: ) interior, with that 3.3L DOHC V6...I think it's rated at like 230hp and 210 lb/ft. My parents test drove one with the 2.4L I-4 and said it was just gutless for the size of the car...no power on the freeway.

It'll be neat to see how it stacks up against the deVille in terms of gas mileage. My deVille is rated 16/25, the Highlander is rated 19/25. My dad says he thinks it'll get around 20-22 at 70MPH, whereas the deVille gets about 24-25 at 70.

A Cadillac that gets better mileage than a Toyota????!!!! Imagine that!

Oh yeah, and I'll be taking the deVille up to Duluth next weekend, so my sins will be repented. :D

the radiator and coolant hoses really don't care if it is 50* outside or 100* outside... the coolant inside them is always ~220+F. Simple preventative maintenace is key, and highway trips will no longer be a concern. Heck before I was (really) crazy about the preventative maintenace, I drove my '79 DeVille 1,400 miles from NY to FL.....

I like SUV's, real ones, not the sissy ones. Quite versatle.... now I'm looking for one that is 4WD...

I also have a really bad track record of driving over, or thru anything I can tho.... but thats where all the fun comes in!

I knew you would chime in when I posted that ;)!

It is the perfect car for her, she wants something trouble free and can get her out of a jam in the winter. For the price, there was no other SUV that could match it in terms of options, ruggedness, and reliability. The stock wheels on the QX4 are ugly... so I went to tirerack and bought those wider AT Italia wheels and liked the fact that they looked stock-ish (so did she).

After we get married and move to Florida to practice, we will give the QX4 to her Dad and she wants a M45 or GS430

Yea I like em alot... My favorite color is the all-silver, they all look terrific, but I think the silver one is one of the best silver cars out there. Its weird, some cars can make silver look fleet-car-ish and others just make it shine. The QX4 fits that category.

Those were some strange times, back when there were no Infiniti-designed products in the Infiniti lineup. They were all rebadges of Nissans sold in Japan (Nissan Cima = Q41), Europe (Nissan Primera = G20), or North America.

95% of SUV's will never be any farther off the road than the Toys-R-Us parking lot.

Drive Report!

It rode fairly smooth, had pretty good power (great power above 3500 rpm), decent seats (answered my long standing firm v. soft question...soft seats are better) and got decent gas mileage....25 on the way up wiht a tailwind, and 22 on the way home, both at 72 mph.

Yes but how did you like it.

It bored me to the point of me almost falling asleep behind the wheel!

In other words, It did the job, but left me bored and unsatisfied...kinda like eating saltine crackers.

Thats because it is. Nissan just rebadged it as an Infiniti for the U.S.
