I don't need it to also burn DVDs, although that would of course be a plus.

Hands down, this is the absolute best you can get:

For a small donation, you get the updated registered versions for life. The free version will only rip an entire title selection, registered version will rip whatever sections you want, and gives you more options.

You can rip by quality settings, file size, video resolution etc. It has built in xvid decoding, but I recommend going to http://www.divx.com/ and downloading their latest codec, as divx is superior to all IMHO.

Can you just record the audio from a DVD? My wife gets her Graduate school lectures on DVD and would just like to load the audio on her iPod.
