: Interchangability of Body Parts from 77-92 deville/brougham

I have a 1978 Cadillac Coupe Deville with a bad trunk and rear bumper. I know that the trunk and roof line is different from 1977-1979 vs 1980-1992 bodystyles. What I wanted to know is what body parts can be interchanged from 1977-1992. Specifically a Rear Bumper and Possibly the Front Bumper.
It has been difficult to find a good rear bumper for a 1978-79 cadillac if 1978 could be interchanged with 1980 to 1989 or 1992 it would be great.
I appreciate your help,

Almost nothing at all from a post-1980 body shell will fit a 1977-1979. Most chassis and interior parts will swap over, but the body is quite a bit different. And 1977-1979 bumper will fit on your car though. I'd usually go into more detail, but I'm very tired, excuse me.

I was not sure about the rear bumper. My friend has a 90 brougham and I was comparing the bumper from his car to my 78 and the center section looked alike. I know the trunk is different and the body fillers are different and the style of the taillights are different but I thought that the center section of the bumper might be the same, given similar appearance and model and body type.
77-79 Rear Bumpers seem to be more difficult to find versus a 80-92 Bumper.
If it is not, I guess I will have to keep looking,
Sorry, Mike, but Ben's right. The exterior of the 77-79 is totally different from 80-92; almost nothing will interchange. People have asked about the rear bumper interchanging before. Turns out that though the center sections look very similar, they are different enough not to interchange. Happy hunting.

yeah i second that... i asked a question about swapping a hood from a 77-79 into my '85 just because i liked the lines better but everyone told me that it wouldnt work. most interior parts will work though as mentioned above.

I thought the same thing until I was gonna do a swap one day. Just like mentioned above, the rear bumper center is just differant enough to not be interchangeable.

Bumper shocks and bumper bolt patterns were reduced in size starting in 1980. They could be modified to fit but they don't bolt right up.

Mike, is your rear bumper beyond repair? If it's minor dents/dings it might could be straightened and rechromed. As to the vertical bumper ends that house the tail lights, those show up on ebay all the time (and these are also specific to 1977-1979).

Thanks for your replies, I had a feeling that nothing was interchangeable on the exterior of the car. In regards to the condition of the rear bumper, it is rotted through in spots, large enough to stick your finger through it. I would rather find something in good shape with decent chrome or one that is dull but can be rechromed. In regards to the tailight ends, I know that they are specific to 78=79. I did find out that the rear bumper is actually different in 1978 versus 1977 via 1978 service manual supplement. If anybody could guide me to the right place to find some cheap bodyparts to fit my car, it would be most appreciated. I have been searching many junkyards, coming to find no 78-79 cadillacs and everything after 1980, some with great bumpers. The only place I found bumpers that would fit my car was Columbia Too up in Washington, NJ. But they were a little expensive and it was not in the best of shape.
Thanks for your help,
The junkyards here are jammed with 77-79 Caddys, most with good to decent chrome. The only problem is getting it to you. Getting it off the car for you is no problem for me, but the shipping charges would be a bitch!

Just one question, is there a "One Year Wonder" in Cadillac body parts, and if so, what year was it??

Pretty much anything before the '70s...
