Usually a brake pad will squeel/screech once it has met its end of life. There is usually a metal indicator when the pad is about 1/4 or less left that touches the rotor to produce the sound you are indicating. Inspect the brake pads yourself by removing your rims or have a specialist look at it.

If your steering wheel shakes when you change the pads, then you may also need to turn (resurface) the rotors. You can do this yourself for like $5 a rotor at an autoparts store.
