Ok several problems here: 1) My 5.0 blows a lot of black smoke when I pass or kick the idle down (leaves marks on my garage door - outside of door)
2) When it gets hot... real hot... and I slow down to make a turn not stopping completely the trans seems to start out in the wrong gear.(like a stick shift starting out in second) it bucks until you floor it to get it to move.
What do you guys think am I done for? Is the tranny shot? Thanks Dave
yeah check for choke problems... my friend has an old 77 truck and it was running way rich like yours and he rebuilt the carb and it was fine. take it to a professional and have it rebuilt with all new gaskets etc if the problem persists. a fuel injector might fix the accelleration problem too. check for trouble codes on the ECM. hope this helps
Thanks for the reply guy's, I was thinking about having the carb. re-built.I'd guess that it might affect the trans. if it were not right.I also have to do something with the heat riser valve that is on the drivers side exhaust, the bracket has rotted away so it is just sitting there not opening or closing the valve( I at least hope that it is in the open position) I wish my car had fuel injection instead of the old computer controlled carb. (piece of junk). Any ideas on whether I can get an Edelbrock/Holley carb for it?(computer controlled) Any how Thanks again, Dave
Fix the heat riser, clean the carb as best you can using sprays and fuel additives. Change fuel filters paying special attention to the one in the inlet on the carb. Run it a couple of hundred miles and see if it gets better. Nothing really wrong with the carb you have if it is not shot.
Make sure that heat riser is open! Think about trying to drink a milkshake through a skinny straw...
