thank you 2000CaddyCatera 05-19-07, 08:30 PM First off :welcome:
I haven't had my car long enough to answer any quality questions. It's been good to me for 4k miles that I've put on it at least  Besides a couple little quirks it had when i bought it.
As far as performance and such, these cars are kinda hard to judge. They are underpowered for thier weight (as far as being a sports sedan). I think Motor Trend said like 8.8secs to get to 60. Not bad for a daily driver, but not as fast as its competition. They have good handiling though, especially with the sport package.
The factory Bose system is the best factory system I've heard (some people said some Chrysler's sound better, but I've never heard them). I say that because I like to have my teeth rattle, not just the mirrors  As far as Ipods go, I got my creative labs mp3 player hooked up using my old XM radio tape deal. Not as good as a direct connection, but meh, I like with it.
Hopefully some of the other guys on here can get you straight on the other issues.
Wes The caveman 05-20-07, 12:04 PM man myadvice to ya ,sit down get ready to spend couple hours infront of your computer ,and go through this forum including past post im talking like from 2004 and u will see what kinda car catera is , but please ,do a research before u buy it or u will be stuck with that has constantly failing oil coolers and tons of stuff. passionaterage 05-20-07, 09:06 PM You'll buy it, you'll fall in love with it, it will drain you dry with the constant problems, yet you will hate to sell it because you'll have to take a loss. For the love of God man, don't do it!!! the_driver_07 05-20-07, 09:15 PM that bad ?
i like the look of them..somthing different..but i geuss i wont get one 2000CaddyCatera 05-20-07, 09:57 PM If it's a 97 or 98, I would walk away. If it's a 2000-01, I'd consider it. The earlier ones were really plagued with major (read exspensive) problems. The 00-01 seem to be much more sound (although still having some problems like any used car). Just read up on all the common problems and see if it's something you want to deal with or not.
Wes todd2fst4u 05-21-07, 12:14 AM don't get it if you dont want to throw down some more money somewhere along the line. if you dont mind then, yeah you should get it. AllenPacla 05-21-07, 12:57 AM Just like the guy at the top said, read from this forum before you make your decision. It definitely is not going to be an investment if that's what you're looking for, because you will be loosing all the money you spent on this car. The car is great without the problems, but to keep it trouble free seems to me like almost impossible, perhaps, just garage it and don't ever use it, then it will be trouble free. The car is just unbelievable when it comes to trying to get it right. It's unbelievably, practically, impossible to get it right, unless you have a ton of money to spend and basically replace everything that breaks with a new one from the dealership and have them install it for you, hell, even that fails most of the time. If you are single and wants to spend time and money with something for the rest the time you own it, then go for it. rinverso 05-22-07, 01:27 PM i recommend getting an extended warranty.....warranty direct is about $1800 for three years, 36,000 miles. includes seal and gaskets and all electronics. even covers the timing belt...it has paid for itself in my five months of ownership.. btw....i love this car!! AllenPacla 05-24-07, 11:57 PM How about," just look for something else". the_driver_07 05-26-07, 08:45 PM so..this sucks because i like on
but it sounds like there really bad
and i hate to hear this
because i thought about going all black in style, and different
maybe ill look into a gs300 or a bmw 3seires elvin315 05-27-07, 03:02 AM I am the proud owner of a 2001 Cadillac Catera Sport. No Cadillac before the Catera ever handled like this. The resulting ride is closer to Corvette than Cadillac. I absolutely love this car. I turn off the Traction Control and "drift" around corners with a big grin on my face. It's had a few issues that I've had to address like weeping valve covers and a leaking heater valve but I expected problem with a used car. Cadillac issued a recall regarding the timing belt tensioner and my car had its replaced at 18,000 miles so I guess I'll be due for a new belt and tensioner fairly soon. I wish there was a way to convert the belt to a chain but regardless, I accept this and her other quirks as part of owning the best handling car I've ever owned.
You can keep your BMWs and Audis. I prefer Opel's styling, especially over the origami look that Cadillac has embraced. I seriously dislike their creased and folded sheetmetal. All those flat panels turn me off. BMW's new styling is very un-German. Borders on bizzare. And I can't stand the Audi's bigmouth grille styling. If I'm going to spend that kind of scratch I have to like how it looks regardless of the performance. The Catera's rounder, smoother sheetmetal is more pleasing to my eye. I've already added a personal touch to my Cat with new aftermarket 17 inch wheels. The spokes are thinner than the Sport's original chunky ones. I'd like to add a few body pieces like a Steinmetz front spoiler, side skirts, and a black mesh grille to make her stand out. I don't want to go over the top, just some subtle updates. Those kits are hard to come by over here as the Catera was never a big seller. There's little aftermarket suport for her here so I'll have to order from the UK or Germany for what I want.
I generally like the 3.0L engine. I've owned motorcycles for almost thirty years (I currently ride a Kawasaki Concours, a GTR1000 to you) so I'm used to high reving engines, and boy does this engine like to spin. Sounds like a racecar. I do wish it didn't seem so delicate. The 3.0L doesn't enjoy a reputation for reliability. Among the complaints are leaking valve covers, seizing timing belt tensioners, leaking waterpumps, an oil cooler which contaminates the engine's coolant, and numerous electronic bugs. The biggest weakness is the timing belt which destroys pistons and valves when it lets go.
These are problems but if you do the maintanence as scheduled, and perform fluid checks weekly you'll spot most troubles before the become serious. Replace the cam belt and tensioner every 40 thousand miles and that won't be a concern either. Look at your tires for unusual wear. That's a clue to the condition of the lower suspension arm bushings. Like with any car, the amount of attention and care you give it the more miles it'll give you.
Like I said I love the car, but would love her even more had Opel performed an engine swap. Cadillac uses the 3.2L in the CTS so they are available but if they're not an improvement why bother swapping. I'm told the 3.6L won't fit the Catera. While I'm not really looking for more power, the LS1 5.7L V8 would've been nice. Power plus reliability. I could show the Beemers my ass with that under the hood. The Aussies put the LS1 in their Commodores. I wish Opel had done the same. hey whats up
