Hey guys,
This may be a question for our boys in blue on the forum. Are semi truck air horns legal on non-commercial vehicles? I know someone that has one on their giant Chevy show truck and love it. I want to know if i put one on my 07 EXT and use it, am i going to get pulled over ASAP for using it?

PS. I'm in Mass

Thanks for all the help.

i think it depends on what state:D

i think it would be funny as hell if you get the thing you pull when you use your horn:D

I had em on my truck before I sold it and I never had any problems. Inspection wise, I think you would possibly have a problem, but I'm not sure. I left my factory horn working and put the air horns on a switch, so I can't tell you for sure if it would pass with a huge ass airhorn blowing at the inspection station.

They are absolutely great when someone cuts you off.

I had 137 dB air horns on my Lade before I sold it. We don't have the burden of scheduled inspections in Arkansas though. I always thought the factory horn was too quiet. I considered the air horns a "safety" add on. ;)

I seen one with a train horn at the dealer's service station. Damn that was loud. I was standing 5ft from his SUV and I could feel the air pressure hit me.

Can this be hooked up with the alarm system? It would give a pleasant surprise to anyone trying to break in.

Good luck with that one. I am almost 100% sure that you can't have them in any state. I wouldn't even try it.

Got one on the way, who cares legal or not, thats pure comedy and I would love to see how johnny law would right that one up, besides it could be considered a safety upgrade, LOL

Yea, I just checked ebay for the train horns... They are small enough you can conceal them, and as long as you leave your factory horn hooked up I dont see youll have much of a problem unless youre an idiot.

Anyone know if you can splice a set of train horns or air horns in the compressor in the rear?

That is going to be so loud. You should also set up that tank to run air tools. It might not come in handy, but with my truck I had the tank running my air horns and air tools. Came in handy on the trail for filling up tires and doing repairs.

It's going to be so loud though, you'll love it.

Installed my Kit last weekend and all I can say is OMG I cant figure out if this is the most redneck thing I've done or the coolest but its fun either way, I installed them where my spare tire goes since my 22 spare wont fit it rides in the bed (EXT) I set mine up with a fitting for an air hose and its pretty nice to have, used it to fill up floats before we took the boat out on Monday. Pretty nice to do that right there on the launch instead of out in the water huffing and puffing, try to post pics later if you guys want them.

Its not a bad job, Two big things Number one take your time I had to make some custom mounts out of angle and did a little minor welding. The welding is not a have to I just did it to secure some of my mounts. Number 2 is probably the biggest Mount your compressor to the frame, There is a nice spot right behind the factory compressior where you can mount it sideways on the frame. I moved mine three times, anywhere but the frame it vibrates the entire truck. You can hear it in the dash and feel it in the brake and gas pedals, the rubber gromets in the pump do not stop the vibration, frame mounting is the only place I found with no Vibrations. Took me about 12 hours to do it right. Be ready to refit several fittings at the end to close leaks.

In California, there is a law for unlawful use of horn. If you honk without merit, ie: road rage, or as you probably intend, to scare someone, you can be cited. There is also noise ordinances, a set decibel level of exhaust or noise emitting from a vehicle. If you exceed it you can be cited. I believe the horn ticket is 150.00 and the noise is 300.00. Some beach cities in So. Cal even got the OK to confiscate the equipment or tow the vehicle. That was pretty hardcore.
These laws came around because of all the lowered trucks and rice rockets that appeared after the car movies got big and the stereos got louder. It was pretty intense. Huntington Beach hits us harley guys pretty hard as well because of the exhaust pipes. Once they stop you, it depends on your attitude how far they go. Try and act as big man on campus and lip off, you become the newbie freshman real quick.
