: Blacked the headlights

over the past few weeks I got bored with the all chrome look of my headlights from when I cleared the corners. So the other day I took my headlights apart, masked off the DTR and turn signal reflector area, and then painted the rest of the housing with Gloss Black High Heat paint I purchased at autozone. I also cut the orange reflector to cover up all the open space except for the where the 194 bulb is. After a few coats, I let it all dry overnight and then reassembled the headlights. Tell me what you guys think.

yeah, after I baked the headlights and took it apart, there were just 2 hex nuts and torx screw holding the piece in.

what % tint do you have on your front window?

memphisstylee
05-13-07, 12:52 PM
5% on all the side and rear windows and 20% on the windshield. you cant see in the truck during the day and especially not at night. during the rain its kinda hard to see the road but with HIDs its not that bad once you get used to it.

BAKED THE HEADLIGHTS??????? Why do you do that?

memphisstylee
05-13-07, 10:29 PM
why or how? just take all the lights out of the housing so you dont heat the lights, throw it in the oven at about 200* for about 10 min. just enough to loosen the seal so you can get it apart. easier than using a heatgun.

the same thing on the 07???

not sure about the 07 headlights. but im sure they're similar though. if you're even slightly mechanically enclined, then getting headlights seperated into individual pieces should be an easy task. I had never baked a single headlight before I had done mine and I didnt have a single problem getting them apart or properly resealing them. i could give you more pointers on how I did it if you wanted.

I am going to try on my 07. How long do you have to work after you remove the headlight from the oven?

you have about 2-3 minute before the seal gets hard again. but if you can get two sides open before it hardens, you could just stick it back in the over for a few minute to warm the seal up again and then get the last 2 sides.

I did the same to my last car and was thinking about the same this on my truck. I'm kinda iffy on it. You did a good job on them though:thumbsup:

I like the grill, still trying to decide between that, chroming it, or getting an aftermarket one.

I really like the emblem up front. The black and chrome look awesome together.

Thanks man. Im going for a blacked out look with my lade. yeah I like the look of a factory grille painted to match but I want to get a fine mesh grille and paint it black to match. As for the emblem I painted the inside part black and put an old english Z in the middle for my last name.

I really haven't found a grille that I fell in love with with the Escalade. Right now either blacking out the grill or chroming seems to be the way I'll go. If I painted it black I wanted to do something with mesh behind the grille. I really like the SRX sport grill, I wanted to do something like that. It all depends on how lazy I get and if I want to do something like that. Sorta like this:

Sorry to bring such an old thread around again; but I still can't PM :crying2:!
I'm dying to do this to my truck! Has anybody done it to the HID headlamps, or am I asking for trouble??

dang man that look good. i did the same thing with the orange piece and replaced the 194 with a led. it didnt throw off any codes so i stuck with it. im planning on doing the headlights like yours soon because i have tint over mine and it takes away so much lighting.

when splitting the headlight, is there anything I should know other than heating to about 200* for 10 min. then spreading? Also what do you use to reseal them?

Great link; very helpful, thanks!
Can anyone describe how it's different doing 02-06 lights compared to the 07+ link above?

Good info.
I'd like to just clear mine and be done with it. I'll try when I get my lil S10 on the road and have time to let the Lade sit.

How did you get the electrical wiring harness out of the headlight? Or do you have to do that. I removed all the bulds but could not get the electric wars out. When I go to push the connecter in it runs out of space, and therefore I can not think of how to remove it.
