View Full Version : 2001 SLS tire recommendations? My wife's 2001 SLS (52,000 miles) currently has Michelin Symmetry tires on stock rims (225/60/16). I plan to keep the same size tire. The Michelins have been very good and ride great.
Unless someone has other suggestions, I plan to replace with them with the identical tire ($490.00 out the door, tax, stems, etc included) I know they are expensive, but honestly not that big of a deal. Just wondering if there is a better riding/quieter all weather tire out there (at any price).
Thanks for your comments. I use goodyear VIVA 2. They seem to have good traction and ride. jadcock 05-10-07, 01:09 PM I think it'll be hard to find a quieter-riding tire than the Michelin Symmetry. The other tire I would recommend is the Michelin X Radial DT (available at Sam's Club, Costco, or BJs warehouse clubs). I had it on my '97 SLS. Excellent tire, rode great, very quiet, and pretty sporty, too.
But honestly, if you're happy with the Symmetrys, I don't see how you could go wrong getting them again. Less than $500 out the door isn't that expensive for a quality set of tires. You don't want to go cheap on tires. Dadillac 05-10-07, 01:17 PM I've got one word for you. Goodyearassurancetripletreads  . The triple treads are more expensive than the Symmetry's, but they are an excellent tire. During the winter weather you will feel glued to the snow and ice. Others have said that they are noisy, but I have not felt that way about them.

That price I got for the Symmetrys is at Sam's Club! I have always been very happy with their prices and service. I just called them, the X radial out the door is actually more (about 52 bucks more for four - $540.00 total ). The "X" has a higher mileage rating, but the saleman told me that the Symmetry would ride "softer". Soft is not exactly what I prefer, but the wife loves the cushy soft ride of the SLS, and was the reason we did not get an STS originally.
Thanks for all the comments. I really appreciate it. I had to replace the OEM tires on my '02 SLS before I sold it to my daughter because of a vibration. I used the Goodyear Assurance Comfort Treads and was quite happy with the ride. It is supposed to be a little more comfort oriented than the Triple Tread. Depends on where your preference lies. At http://www.tirerack.com/index.jsp you can compare different tires. I will be replacing Symmetrys soon with either Goodyear Asurance ComforTred or
Michelin HydroEdge. Likely Michelin due to past good performance. Ride and noise comfort are most important to me. JoeT1224 05-10-07, 05:14 PM I second Jason's comments about the X-Radials. We replaced the Symmetrys at 52k miles with X-Radials from Sam's and they are great. Quiet, smooth yet sporty, and they have barely any wear on them after about 15k miles. Of course I'm a stickler for tire pressure and rotation so I take care of all that too.
Oh and we got a great deal on them! $98.28/tire and the total came out to $437.12.
Joe dwight.j.carter 05-10-07, 05:19 PM My brother repaced his tires on his CTS with Yokohama AV4S tires. With that being said I thought I would give them a try and they are a very decent sport tire and all season. I like them but on the RWD CTS you guys should have seen him getting stuck in the snow with thiem :) while my STS just kept on a going ! That was a great deal...
I am going with one of the Michelins as I have had some bad luck with Goodyear. Plus both my Caddys have Michelins w/ no complaints .
Again, I appreciate all comments. Thanks guys.
Todd jadcock 05-11-07, 05:54 AM I have also never been real impressed with Goodyear, and have never had a Michelin that I didn't like. Even their (Goodyear's) newer Assurance line has mixed reviews in regards to vibrations and balancing in the Tirerack.com user reviews. dwight.j.carter 05-11-07, 07:54 AM I had problems with the michelins wearing down to fast and the tire itself hardens after a long period of time. Of course then again I am driving an STS so you know I am going wide open throttle :) I had problems with the michelins wearing down to fast and the tire itself hardens after a long period of time. The OEM V-rated Pilots on my SRX wear a little fast for my liking too. I expect that with a performance tire though. I do like the handling and ride of the Pilots very much though.
Well, I picked up four new Symmetrys for the SLS this morning at Sam's Club. As usual, very satisfied with service and price. I have 70k on Symmetry's also with WOT, and have maybe 15k left on the tread. Balanced/Rot @ 6k and never a problem with the ride or wear. I keep them at 32psi which is slightly higher than the door sticker's 30psi and have not noticed any real difference in the smooth ride. jadcock 05-11-07, 08:36 AM My 2001 STS has the Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus, in the H-rated version. I think they're about the best, most versatile, tire on the market; certainly the "best" tire I've ever owned. Tested by Tirerack.com against the new Goodyear Eagle ResponsEdge, the much older design Michelin MXV4 Plus exceeded the Goodyear in all dry track performance metrics save for "brake modulation". It also posted the fastest slalom time and highest cornering G-force. On a dry track (its performance suffers in the wet). It also had better noise/ride comfort than the Goodyear. This tire is an aging design, and I think was inappropriately pitted against a more serious performance tire (a Michelin Pilot would have been a more appropriate choice in my opinion), so it's even more impressive to me that the Michelin scored as well as it did. | |
