So I was at some party about 2 weeks ago and I was only there to pick up my drunk lady, and while I was just chillin' there waiting, some sloshed guy came up to me and asked me if I watch sports. I said no. He asked me if I like cars. I said yes. He asked me what I like. I said Cadillacs. He responded with, "Cadillacs are nice, but they have some problems with them." I was expecting something at the very least semi-coherent, but didn't get it. He proceeded to tell me that steering columns are weak, and something else about garbage suspension. I was like, "I've never heard of either problem, maybe in the 80's it was a problem. What models had these weaknesses?". His friends proceeded to pull him away from me because they could tell I was not in a good mood to begin with, and his drunk talk wasn't putting me in a good mood.
So has anyone heard of any of these problems? I was expecting him to say moisture in Seville tail lights or bad heater cores in Devilles, but no. So what are some other common problems and on what models?

People point out the suspensions just like they do in Lincolns, just because they are more complicated and can be expensive to fix if you dont have half a brain.
Ill agree about the Steering Column though, but not just for Cadillac, it affects almost ALL GM coupes and sedans from 1997-2002. This is the problem that finally did my 2001 STS in. In the steering column there is a part called an Intermediate Steering Shaft, and its of a somewhat poor design that loses its grease over short periods of time and thus causes really bumpy and thud like steering conditions in the wheel when turning. On some Police Impalas, it actually got so bad it caused the shafts to separate and caused an accident. Can you imagine not being able to control your steering? That to me would be worse than losing brakes. What baffles me is that while GM has put out a very clear TSB on the issue, they refuse to just replace the part with a better design, but I guess its what best for the bottom line.
What happened with my STS was that the previous owner, a GM employee had taken the car in so many times for this he eventually had it lemon lawed. I saw this as a Golden Opportunity to pick up a cheap STS. Well, I had the problem fixed once, and to my frustration it came back less than two months later.

oh yeah, steering columns. my 79 had a terrible one, it moved around like that drunk guys head prolly was while he was tryin to talk to u. it had that "telescopic" feature as well. i think that is what made it so weak and prone to lucy syndrome. but the car did have either 200 or 300k on it. (cant tell for sure cuz of the odometer only being 5 digit) so maybe one of the previous owners pulled on it when exiting, i noticed myself doing that, only did it in that car tho, must have been cuz of the design.

Yea, I think he was just tryin' to be an ass, and I'm sure his Honda is a perfect car with no problems! Thanx for the info, guys....
