I just found out that my new 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora is going to cost me $140 a month for full coverage. Thats ridiculous! I have it under my parents' name with State Farm, $250 deductible. I really need to shop around for a different company. Does anyone know of any company that provide insurance that is comparable to State Farm's coverage, but at rates that are less expensive? I tired to get on Progressive.com and Gieco.com and all that BS but the sites are too difficult to navigate, so if someone could please help me out, that'd be great. Thanks a lot!

Its not gonna be easy at 17, in fact, when I was 18 I couldnt even touch Progressive and ESPECIALLY Geico. When I finally turned 21 Progressive went WAAAY down and is still NOT anywhere near cheap for my 330. I eventually turned to a company called Travelers and I pay about 240 a month for full coverage versus about 310 or so it would have been with Progressive. Dont freak out, it wouldnt be anywhere near that for a 98 Aurora. Another company to try is WWW.ESURANCE.COM IF they are in your area they are AWESOME (had them in Florida, but they dont service BFE Kansas), they have no overhead of having to pay local agents or run buildings (though if you like the personal attention then youre kind of screwed).

Finally, this makes it crystal clear why should never just shop for a car, but shop for the car AND the insurance at the same time. It doesnt matter if you can finagle a 200.00 a month payment on that Porsche 911 if the insurance is still going to cost you 900 a month.

EDIT: I rethought this out and you know what, I think youre gonna be best off stayin right where you are bro. With your parents driving record, Multi-Car discount and length of time theyve been with the company, there is little chance youll be able to beat that rate elsewhere by jumping on your own policy.

I think your probably right about staying where I'm at. My agent said it would lower $10/month when I turned 18, and then a whole lot more at 19.

Believe me, I will be making plenty of money to pay of my loan and my insurance easily over the summer. I just kind of wanted to use a little of that money for mods  . Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait until after summer when I get the car fully paid off to start really thinking about mods :disappoin .

Thanks!

Try triple A. They give great rates.

$1,700/year for full coverage isn't bad....

...right now i am in the NYS assigned risk pool, paying $2,250 or so for bare minimal on just the DeVille (well, Delta 88 right now)

when I go to reinsure it, it will be like $2,100 for the DeVille with comprehensive ($200ded.) .... I would say you have pretty good rates right now... I am also on my own plan.

Your deductible is horrid. Let me tell you why:

Insurers think about all sorts of things when it comes to this: credit, accidents, ages; likelyhoods.

When you elect a $250 deductible, they say to themselves, "He's more likely to get in an accident, he's 17 and male. He's more likely to file claims, it only costs $250 out of his pocket. Thus, lets up his payments!"

If you think you can be responsible, and not drive like a normal teenager, then I would consider going to $500 or even a $1000 deductible... though that's pushing it. Basically, put your deductible at the point where you feel uncomfortable paying for the repair or loss yourself. Now, you have the advantage of your parents time with the company, the multi-line discount, etc.. But that's all negated by your low deductible. You pay for that.

I'm 24, so I'm charged out the ass for my insurance. No tickets in the past three years, under-25 segment, slightly above-average credit, driving a STS w/V8, full coverage, $500 deductible. Bam, $150 a month. :crying2:

I'm working on getting my deductible changed, plus I'm buying a home, which helps because insurance is credit based and I will get a multi-line discount.

Honestly, ask to get a comparison of deductibles from your agent. See where $500 gets you. Then think about how long it will take to get that extra $250 saved up to cover your cost, and then save it.

All in all, welcome to the ass-reaming that is insurance! :banghead:

-Kevin I think you're right about staying. The reality is at your age, you'll find it hard to even get a company to take you on your own. The ones that will tend to be companies that write high risk, so you're going to be subsidizing someone's DUI coverage. Not fair, but true.
At this point about all you can do is make changes to your coverage. You can drop towing, roadside assistance and uninsured\underinsured motorist coverages if you have those. But the cost is generally pretty low and if you end up needing them you're on your own. The one that would make the most impact on your rate would be to raise your deductable. Most loans allow up to a $500 ded. and some may go to $750 or $1000. That's probably going to be your best option to lower your rate.

This may sound odd to you guys, because it sure seemed odd to me, I'm actually saving $20/month by going with a $250 deductible as opposed to a $500 deductible. I'm not sure how that worked out, but thats why I chose a $250 deductible. Thanks for the replies!

I had state farm for a few years and paid what I thought was pretty expensive rates. However after they dropped my because of an owi I was forced to go high risk. Now that all that is off my record, I checked out going back to state farm and they wont take me. Every other place is now is higher than state farm ever was, and my driving record has no points on it. I would definately suggest staying with State Farm, especially since they reward for family members and the longer you are with them the lower your rates go. After all the research I have done with insurance I found that State Farm offers the best rewards for loyalty. I wish they would take me back. Another thing I had with state farm was a good grade discount. You might want to check that out. In high school I brought a report card with at least one A and they took more money off my premium.

Yeah, I've got the Good Student Discount already. Good thing they only check it once, because I was a reaslly good student my freshman and sophomore year (around the time they checked it) and had straight A's. Now I'm lucky to get B's and C's with all the hard classes I'm taking. Guess I got lucky there. :)

Just to let you know esurance is now part of Geico, so they screw you just as much.

Im also looking for insurance and most of you got it lucky, try living down in south florida. Im looking in to going in a group plan with my mothers name on it (perfect credit) and that would be with are house insurance. Hopefully its a good quote cuz they get enough money out of us just for the house.

Esurance is part of White Mountains insurance group based out of Hamilton, Bermuda (like alot of those internet warranty companies). Their rate quotes for me still beat Geico by a landslide. At 16-17 though its going to be pretty tough no matter where you go. I had to be 18 before even Esurance looked competitive, AND I had Esurance in Florida, which I was surprised they offered insurance there but not in Kansas. Midwesterners might also try American Family or Shelter, they arent TOO bad.

heh... GEICO..... seems like GEICO and getting screwed over go hand in hand.. SCREW GEICO... I'll NEVER go back to them.. after 6 years of policies on and off due to different circumstances and having a car and not having a car, they decided to start screwing me over. had an accident where a lady backed into me.. HER insurance co paid me out in FULL.. she wa found to be 100% at fault by her co.. She cried to MY co. and they found me 20% at fault.. HOW the hell can you be partially at fault?? it's either YOUR fault or THEIR fault.. or it's NO fault.

anyways.. there's prob a MILLION exceptions to the rule.. and they work every one of them. GEICO actually DROPPED me once because of that payout to that woman.. they only paid her $75 friggin bucks!!

after countless more screw overs, I finally had it... I'm trying out this new company now called Mercury or something like that.. I'll repost the name tonight or edit it in here or something. got a substantially lower rate than Geico or progressive for the Eldorado.
