EDMUNDS | Ed Hellwig, Senior Editor

When we first spotted prototypes of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (http://blogs.edmunds.com/Straightline/2640), it was pretty obvious the midsize sedan hasn't changed much. Even with heavy camouflage, its overall size and shape tell us that it barely differs from the current model. Unlike the smaller, extensively redesigned 2008 C-Class (http://www.edmunds.com/future/2008/mercedesbenz/cclass/100536071/preview.html), the next-generation E-Class will continue on a more evolutionary track.

To see how the minor changes will affect the look of the 2010 E-Class, cues have been taken from the prototypes and combined with a little inside knowledge to create these photo illustrations of the E-Class sedan and wagon.

If there's anything about this luxury sedan that will get your attention, it will be the new design for the front end. It appears as though Mercedes-Benz is finished with oval headlights for awhile, as this E-Class will get a more squared-off front fascia. The headlights will adopt a shape that resembles that of the current S-Class (http://www.edmunds.com/mercedesbenz/sclass/2007/index.html), one that gives the E's nose a meaner, more angular look. Unlike the new C-Class with its choice of grille treatments depending on the trim level of the model, the E-Class is more likely to retain its traditional design with a three-pointed star perched atop the hood.

Apart from the obvious changes up front, the rest of the 2010 E-Class will remain classically conservative. No major changes to the belt line, no distinctive window shapes ? nothing. None of this is necessarily a bad thing, as the E-Class is already one of the best-looking sedans and wagons around. Expect some revisions to the rear taillights and a few other minor detail upgrades, but nothing as dramatic as the front clip.

Look for the official debut of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show.

Edmunds Insideline: "Inside Line has learned from supplier sources that the "Phoenix" family will include a high-output series of V6 engines, ranging from 250 to 300 horsepower, for such vehicles as the Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Avenger and future crossover vehicles. The base engine will be a 3.5-liter V6 and will be used in the next-generation Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum and Charger, and Chrysler minivans. Sources said it is "doubtful" that the new, more fuel-efficient engine family will include a diesel but that plans were in place for flex-fuel variants and possibly direct-injection versions, as well as turbocharged versions."

Chery shows off its hybrid technology at Shanghai Auto Show (http://www.chinacartimes.com/2007/04/20/chery-shows-off-its-hybrid-technology-at-shanghai-auto-show/)

CHINANEWS: Chery could easily be called the most innovative Chinese car maker, and this is the reason why. Tomorrow when the Shanghai Car Show officially opens, Chery will show of its hybrid bio-diesel Oriental Son crossover (we think this is a Chery V5 with a name change)

As well as the Cross, Chery have also made their famous Chery A1 (http://www.chinacartimes.com/2007/03/07/is-the-chery-a1-to-become-dodges-first-economy-car/), what Chery call the ?Global Car? as they plan to sell it in every market of the world (or so they say) and its also the one that Dodge wants to use as the base for the Dodge Hornet. Well, as well as making a regular gasoline powered one, they?ve also come up with a hybrid:

The Dodge Crew (JC49) and PT Cruiser (JZ49) Crossovers (Updated 4-19-07)

http://www.allpar.com/images/spy-shots/jc49/jc49.jpg
The photo below is from a ?blind? drive clinic in Southern California; it shows the JC49 to be built in Toluca, based on the Chrysler Sebring platform, with production scheduled for January 2008 (formerly Dec/07). Chrysler may eventually get a version of this vehicle, which might or might not be called the PT Cruiser (http://www.allpar.com/trucks/JC49.html#); it?s scheduled for about 25% of the production total, and would have completely different sheet metal.
Brendy Priddy wrote, ?Codenamed JC49, this new SUV will be built on the Sebring platform, with production scheduled to start in December of 2007, and an on-sale date of early 2008. Because of the timing, we?re not sure if they?ll choose to call it a 2008 model...the most unexpected (and interesting) feature that stands out in these images is the dual exhaust!? Numerous engines are rumored but the 3.5 liter is almost certain.
http://www.allpar.com/images/spy-shots/jc49.jpg
An anonymous benefactor wrote, ?Too bad no one has interior spy shots as this car has a unique looking interior with the radio located below the HVAC controls, and on models with the back-up camera the camera is too below the HVAC controls. The nav models have the nav screen up above the HVAC controls (on lesser models this is a storage bin), and the controls for the nav are below the HVAC where the radios would be in lesser models. The cluster has a jeweled look and I'd have to say is very nice. Hopefully the spies can get some pics of this interior as it is worth seeing.?
The new crossover is a little larger than the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Toyota RAV-4. In this clinic, the Dodge (http://www.allpar.com/trucks/JC49.html#) was being compared with the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Nissan Murano, and Santa Fe. It is planned as a front driver with all wheel drive optional. The 3.5 liter V6 with six-speed automatic is an almost certain top-end option; this particular vehicle had dual exhaust.
http://www.allpar.com/images/spy-shots/jc49/spy-shot.jpg
Chrysler (http://www.allpar.com/trucks/JC49.html#) and Dodge crossovers coded JC49 and JZ49 are set to be produced starting in December 2007, with large-scale exports to Europe starting in 2010 (perhaps set to coincide with a new diesel powerplant?). The JC49, at least, is planned to be part of Chrysler?s long-delayed serious entry into Europe. One of them might be named PT Cruiser but would not be recognizable to current owners. The Toluca plant is set for a $1 billion upgrade to allow production of the new crossover alongside the PT Cruiser; it built 177,370 PT Cruisers in 2005, not bad for a ?fad car? in its fifth year (2007 will be the seventh year, including 2001). A JZ49 version of the Dodge crossover may arrive around 2010.

Brendy Priddy wrote, ?In addition to this Dodge, the Chrysler brand may also get a version of this. Referred to as the JZ49, Chrysler?s Sebring-based crossover will likely not arrive before the 2010 model year and may (or may not) replace the retro-styled PT Cruiser. Wearing completely unique sheetmetal, the Chrysler model will only account for 25% of the total units built.?

Sneak peek: Chrysler Cuda

DETROITNEWS - - Our illustrator nearly fell off his feet when he heard mention of a possible Chrysler Cuda -- twin to the upcoming Dodge Challenger -- during an interview with Chip Foose, hot rodder, television talent and all-round good guy, at the New York auto show.

Though Plymouth, the original brand to sell the Cuda, has long been out of business, Chrysler seems to be the apparent heir. Whether the market needs yet another muscle car remains to be seen. Chrysler could likely bring such a car to market with relative ease.

This photo illustration takes elements of the Cuda and adds them to the Challenger model. The six-opening grille was a '72 Cuda signature, as were the shaker hood and the lower driving lights. Single round headlights are more characteristic of the '70 Cuda, with Gatling gun LED design similar to those seen on the Challenger concept. Wheels from the Chrysler SRT8 complete the look and are more indicative of the badge that the new Cuda would now call home.
