I hear of this 'problem' with the transmission for the Corvette and GTO...what is it and what can be done about it?

It forces you to shift from 1st to 4th if you don't rev your RPMs to a certain point before shifting. It supposedly helps the fuel economy of these vehicles and keeps them out of the 'gas-guzzler' category. There are some aftermarket companies that offer solutions though. Chuck C 03-29-04, 10:36 PM ah, so if I'm a guy who likes to rev it in first gear briefly (say up to 2,000rpm), I have no chance of 2nd or 3rd gear? also, is it comfortable to shift from 1-4? Elvis 03-29-04, 11:48 PM I think I see now why there are so many manual CTS's for sale out there with less than 5000 miles. Buy a Skip shift ByPass, you can buy it at any Corvette vendor one of them is West Coast Corvettes or Mid America Corvettes. All it is a blank plug that fits the solenoid plug that comes of the tranny, except is has a resistor in it that fools the Computer into not setting a code. I've use it on my last four Corvettes.  Elvis 03-30-04, 12:01 AM Would that void your warranty? Or is that something you have to remove every time you take it to the dealer for service? Stoneage_Caddy 03-30-04, 11:38 AM the GTO i drove went right into second , i was babying it and shifted well under 2k rpm , maybe gm bypassed it for the ride and drive demo cars ? i have experenced it on 90s 6 speed vettes and camaros tho c5 rv 03-30-04, 01:37 PM ah, so if I'm a guy who likes to rev it in first gear briefly (say up to 2,000rpm), I have no chance of 2nd or 3rd gear? also, is it comfortable to shift from 1-4? If you DON'T rev it over 2,000 RPM in 1st gear, it will prevent you from going into 2nd or 3rd. It assumes that you are loping along, saving gas and don't care if you end up in 4th instead, since the engine has sufficient low end torque to allow you to continue to lope along. If you are revving it out, it assumes that you want better performance and it will allow you to shift into 2nd and 3rd. As for comfort when the device kicks in, a gate is electrically engaged and you notice that when you pull down from 1st, the shifter slides right and into 4th. On the vette, there's a dashboard light telling you it happened. | |
