Hi to everyone,

here is my problem, hoping someone of you can give some suggestions.
My car, a 1976 Cadillac Calais, until some weeks ago was working fine. But....one morning didn't want to move at all.
So, here is what happened and what actually happens.
After turning the engine on the car doesn't move, at all. Only after several minutes of warming up, about 10, only the reverse starts working. After some more minutes even the other gears start working. Practically, when engine is cold the car doesn't move.
I got the impression that it is a transmission pressure problem, maybe. Fluid level is fine, checked and checked again.
Before getting in a big work dismantling the transmission and having it checked, I would like to have some advices by this forum
Sorry for my poor english, hope you can understand what I wrote. :bigroll:
Thanks for your attention.
Luca

Given those symptoms, it sounds like there's gunk possibly in the transmission that thins out as the transmission fluid warms up.

I'm not a transmission expert though.

Hey danomac! always nice to see another west coaster! There aren't many of us on these boards. Most of the Canucks on here are from Ontario.

Yes I wish I knew more about transmissions so I could help you, but I'm sure someone here will...

From the troubleshooting guide in my manual:

Malfunction: Inoperative (No Engagement)
Component: Oil Filler and Pickup Tube: (1) Pick-up tube out of position, (2) o-ring cut or missing at case, (3) wrong strainer assembly, (4) strainer contaminated - restricted
Component: Pressure Regulator Valve: (1) Valve stuck

Describe how you are checking the transmission fluid.

HI,

I have been checking transmission fluid as the manual says. Engine on, shift lever in park position and oil warm. Did it even more than one time and should be the right way but.....still problems...

And also shift into all of the gears, Drive, Driver Left, Drive Right, Reverse before checking.

Seals are dried up. Add a brand name trans additive.

If that does not work, add a can of STP oil (90 wt??) That helps trannies that do not shift.
