Me and my bmw loving friend were debating about these 2 cars and were wondering which one is the faster car. The STS is a 4.6 V8 with 320HP and the BMW is 4.4 V8 with 320HP.. I've driven my bosses STS with the V8 and it definetly has balls however I have nothing to compare it to as far as the BMW is concerned. So who would come out on top between these two?

Win as in half a car, or walk the STS? I keep reading a bunch of different 0-60 times, which is just confusing me more.

I think it would be by a decent margin. I mean 0-60 times for the 540i are under 6 seconds while the STS I think is running mid to low 6 second 0-60 times. The 540i does low 14 second 1/4's and I've seen my buddies dad's 2001 540i w/ 6 speed manual at Atco run a 13.8 in stock trim. I still have yet to see a new STS at the track so I dunno as to what kinda real world numbers they're running but I doubt they're breaking into the 13's stock

Just to give you an idea here's a Edmunds test drive of a 2005 STS V8

0-60 mph: 6.3 seconds
1/4: 14.42 @ 97.23 mph

While a 2001 540i according to the magazines is rated at

0-60 mph (Auto): 5.7 seconds
(6 speed): 5.5 seconds

1/4 (auto): 14.3
(6 speed): 14.0

Dayum.. I like the STS but the 540 seems like an animal stock. The Eldo is starting to pull the more $$ a month than a new car so I was looking at something fast for around 25K. I'm trying to wait it out for the camaro but over a year is a longg time.. then again I dont really wanna be a "bmw driver".

I think BMW wins but I wouldn't lose any sleep for that

The 540 is anything but an animal. A CTS-V will leave it in the rearview mirror all day long. Hell, a V will leave even the 550 in the rearview.

I'd like a V but cant afford it and stick in NYC would suck.. the inner speed freak in me is saying "wait for the camaro" but then again I'd be happy with a 05 STS with a v8 which is almost impossible to find.

Heavy discounts now on the STS-V if you want an auto.

Heavy discounts now on the STS-V if you want an auto. How bad are they discounting them now? I've heard through the grapevine that they're having a hard time selling them

The STS won't handle quite as crisply as the BMW, especially on the stock tires. In my experience with E39s, the brakes in the BMW will feel a little better and the visual quality of the interior plastics is dramatically better in the BMW.

The STS will be dramatically more reliable and cost a lot less to maintain than the BMW and is, in many fundamental ways, a much better built car.

I've owned several E39s, own a BMW repair and performance shop and usually drive my STS to work.

540s can really suck money out of your wallet on maintinence....
