An article in the Saskatoon StarPhoenix quoting the Edmonton Journal (March 26, 2004) by Jeremy Cato, as follows:

Edmonton-"A few months from now Cadillac will introduce an all-new version of it's STS luxury sedan, and one of at least two cars it will be measured against is the Mercedes Benz E-Class.

Another will be BMW's 5 series. These two define the mid-size luxury sport sedan category.

For its part, the E Class has balanced handeling, a state of the art engine and transmission, a roomy and luxurious interior, and graceful styling with bulging fenders, and a pert, upturned mini-spoiler on its trunk lid.

Where the 5 series is a radical design take on luxury sedans for the 21st century, the E class is more subdued, more traditional. The proportions work very well and as work of automotive sculpture, this E class takes Mercedes sleek and sporty design theme a step foreward. The right step foreward.

The E lass comes with all sorts of electronic gizmos and gadgets, the kind of cutting-edge wizardry which has been causing Mercedes some headaches. Quality surveys from both J.D. Power and Associates and Consumer Reports have found that electronic glitches are causing a few headaches for Mercedes owners.

In fact, Juergen Hubbert, the retiring DaimlerChrysler AG board member responsible for Mercedes Benz and Smart, said at a recent J.D. Power conference in Las Vegas that Mercedes is "working like hell" to correct the glitches that have befallen the electronic control systems in Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

He then added, "Who is in the lead always has the biggest problems."

For my test, I experienced no electronic boo boos and the positives that came with actually driving this car were many. Honestly, the E 500 are superb. It does everything well, which means Cadillac has its work cut out for it with the 2005 STS. As for the BMW 5 series, its quite a different animal-more focussed on driving dynamics for the enthusiast, where the E500 (302 hp) is clearly engineered for a less aggressive driver.

Interestingly, the E class has less passenger space than a Toyota Camry or Ford Taurus, yet it feels larger."

I left out the paragraph about the engines which only mention the 5.0 302 hp E 500.
