Uugh.. well.. I now have the dreaded Rotten Egg smell coming from my 94 Eldorado. fromwhat I have heard in the past, this USUALLY means it's time for a new catalytic converter. Is this really the case here? or is there something I can do to maybe make the car run better or what not to get rid of this smell? Is it caused by maybe the engine needing a tune up? me running 89 Octane due tot he gas prices?

Any thoughts would be GREAT!!! Hard to show off when it smells like you ate something REALLY bad for lunch... ;)

What you smell is sulfur dioxide....the rotten egg smell. It comes from sulfur in the fuel. If you just started noticing this on a tank of fuel then run that tank out and switch fuels/brands/stations..... The first possibility is that it was simply the fuel....

The other thing with the smell is sometimes the cat is not quit up to operating temps and/or you nail the throttle hard and then stop quickly and cn smell the smell from excess fuel in the cat. Take the car on a resonable drive to warm up the car good...several miles on the expressway and some WOT accels to clean out the system.

I assume there are no driveability issues..??? The other thing that can make the rotten egg smell more obvious is rich operation....i.e...failing/leaking fuel pressure regulator, O2 sensors, dripping/leaking injector, etc... If the engine is running fine I wouldn't worry about this yet...but on a 94 the FPR is probably going to need replacement so you might consider this anyway as a preventative maintenance item...

The smell is not indicative of a failing cat at all......don't know how that idea got started.

Thanks Bob..

As always, you've got to be one of THEE most informative people I've ever met. I'll start checking those items. I've also heard that my throttle body may need to be cleaned out.. I've heard this in a fe other threads in the past about cleaning out the throttle body with some good carb cleaner, etc. going to run some fuel injector cleaner thru the car too just to be sure.. there's no drivability issues so far.. runs like a champ.. and once you mentioned getting on the gas hard and coming to a stop.. heh.. yeah.. I'm guilty of doing that a few times.. especially getting on it hard..

Thanks again Bob!!!

cleaning the throttle body is a good idea as a maintenance item to keep from having any idle speed control problems and/or a sticky throttle...but....it will have no effect on the fuel delivery or the rotten egg smell.

Forget the fuel injector cleaner. Bad idea. Lots of problems with fuel pumps and injectors from injector cleaners in the fuel and "gas treatments" and such. since the fuel contacts the armature windings directly in the fuel pump and the windings in the injectors any solvents can attack the insulation on the windings and destroy them.... Forget it.
