: M5 Vs rest

Has BMW lost its sport sedan lead with the latest M5? It isn't the fastest car in its class, the E63 AMG is quicker, and even a 2004 GTO can match it with an LS1 5.7. The improving standard of comparable cars (Audi S4, CTS-V) makes the M5's ultimate status questionable.

Yeah, the LS2 powered GTO can't stay with a new M5.

Yeah, the LS2 powered GTO can't stay with a new M5.Hell basically the only GM car that can keep up with an M5 would be the Z06

yeah the ls1 GTO will get smoked by the M5, the only LS vehicle on par would be the C5 Z06 with teh Ls6, the ls7 C6 Z06 would take the M5 easily

I believe the newer E63 is slower than the E55 and the M5 beat both of them, slightly... as well as the RS6 and certainly the new S6

So it would seem the the M5 is still king of the castle for its category.

But it said so on the cover of Motor Trend 04' GTO 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, you mean they lied?:)

Back in the early 90s South Carolina State Troopers used a M5 with a power chip donated by BMW NA. That car was good for 0-60 in a little under 6 seconds, which shows how much progress has been made since 1990.

The M5 is far from a drag racer, but still it will best either an LS1 or LS2 Goat.

BMW lists the M5 as 4.5 seconds, but it's faster than that.

C&D got an SMG version of the M5 to do a 4.1 0-60...

Do car makers still carry influence over car magazines in performance testing? It seems the LS1 Goat can't live up to the Motor Trend 4.6 second claim.:suspect:

There are some cases where my GTO feels alot faster than my V... just as a wooden roller coaster feels faster than a steel one :D

The GTO is a very lazy car, it comes with silly all seasons and the suspension is pretty soft, so it leans alot, but handles bumps pretty well. It feels very solid also, I wish I could mix the better sheetmetal/luxuries/handling of the V with the solid feel of my GTO.

I had a Cimarron V6 that could beat both...roller coasters...it was a very special Cimarron.

:)

That's GM's fault concerning the all seasons. They did this with the 4th gen Formula too, it came with 108 mph limited tires std, you had to get a T/A to get real tires as standard equipment.
Any car sold with an LS1 & 2 doors shouldn't come with all season tires.

yeah other cars in it's class are definitely catching up to it.

When it comes to the fun quotient of driving the new M3 looks like being a better ride than the M5. It weighs less, costs less and courtesy of a V8 engine should sound better. Apparently buyers are trading in their M5 V10s with SMG for the Alpina B5 in Europe, so it looks like not everyone appreciates the M5's gearbox.

Ahhhh, but here is the kicker. BMW is changing the SMG out in the M5 this August. They are going with a new DSG type transmission that will make the M5 hot once again (like it ever was not hot, even with the SMG).

Give BMW credit, they stay on the cutting edge and make cars that can more than hold their own.

As to trading an M5 on a new M3, NEVER!

I got to drive the E60 M5 and new M6 at the BMW school in South Carolina last February. Neither car felt like they could get 4.1s to 60mph. There wasn't a whole lot of torque in the lower rpms to get those 4000lbs moving. Once the rpms start climbing you get quite a VTEC-like rush of power. I know, I said VTEC in the same paragraph as M5. That's just how it felt.

according to a few different mags the V is quicker than the gto in the 1/4 mile. I have pulled on several gtos. Got beaten by one with a tune only, and hes an amazing driver - it was from a dig (V's week spot) and I cant lauch the car to well..he has a 6.0 gto, is an amazing driver (12.8 1/4 mile with a tune only)

The previous M5 could manage 4.9/5.0 seconds, and if you tried that a few times the clutch didn't like it, to get to 4.1 seconds in a heavier car (the new M5) would call for more than 100 extra hp, given the old car and new car have the same size engine.

On the subject of torque it was interesting watching Clarkson on Top Gear wind out the Corvette Z06 to 150 mph in top gear from a standstill, that car has torque!!
