View Full Version : Does the 500 really NEED shaft mount rockers?

Hey guys,

I want to know if anyone here has tried running a 500 to 5000-5500 with something other than the very nice (but VERY expensive) shaft mount rocker systems from cad company and others. I don't want to go crazy with it, just 5500 SOMETIMES not that often. I know not to even bother trying it with stock pieces, but isn't there something else I can use aftermarket parts from some other engine that would fit? (rockers, valve springs, etc.) Or, is it really that bad that I need to drop 1200 bucks for a cam and shaft mount rockers and custom pushrods? Machining the valve pockets is not out of the question, neither is ordering custom pushrods or valves. They are available in tons of sizes. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Tyler

I went with a set of shaft rockers from MTS myself ... I just went with the NON Adjustable ones... they run around $499 now... I don't remember paying that much for them a few years back, but I haven't had any problems with them.

I run mine with stock rocker set-up to 5000-5500

Let me pick my brain or dig thru some paperwork.

small block chevy springs , adjustable pushrods, I think I used chevy lifters because of plunger height, some kinda sbc offset retainers.
Maybe used off-set sbc keepers too.

I had broken one spring a long time ago because they were dangerously to coil bind. Built many years ago.
