View Full Version : Xm Radio question! Please help Father Ray 03-23-04, 12:40 AM Hey everybody...
I've got an 03 CTS with the Nav Radio & Bose system.
Problem is, I didn't order it with XM radio and now I REALLY wish I had!
If possible, I would like to "re-program" my existing system,
and add the XM antenna to the car. I don't want an 'aftermarket'
set-up because I like the look & feel of the existing audio system.
(Instead of "SW" (shortwave) band showing up on my viewscreen,
I would LOVE to see XM!!!)
I swung by my Cadillac dealer and asked a couple of service guys
about making this happen. They tell me once the system is in place,
"that's it." It can't be re-worked and my only option is to go with
an aftermarket set-up.
Now, I'm no expert, but this just doesn't wash with me.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Any advice
would be appreciated. THANKS!! :worship: miscreant 03-23-04, 12:46 AM If the 03 is like the 04, it CAN be done, but it's EXPENSIVE. Here's why...
You need the XM radio antenna. You need the XM radio tuner. You need to run new wires from the XM tuner to the Rear Interface Module, then to the Vehicle communication Module, then to the radio. You may even need a new vehicle communication module so that it can communicate that XM is present to the radio through the class 2 serial data line. Then you have to deal with the power to the XM radio tuner. You could forego this and instead purchase the rear body harness for $1296...:bonkers:
Then you deal with the fact that these parts from GM are NOT cheap... :tisk: I also have a 2003 CTS without XM. I was told that adapters were available to allow XM radio to play through the factory Bose system and displayed on the info display. This proved to be false. Without RCA input jacks on on the back of the factory radio, nothing will work that allows the XM to play and information to display. I currently use the Delphi SkyFi system. I hide the unit and wiring in the center console and run the cassette adapter wiring under the left side of the console. I use the 12v power from inside the console. The only thing that shows is the wiring going into the cassette. The small XM antenna mounted on the back window shelf.Delphi sells an update to the SkyFi called the Roady. Circuit City has on sell for $99. Kit includes everything other than the $9.99 monthly fee. I enjoy XM and this is an easy, not the best, fix. Next car will have factory system.

-1-:tisk: gothicaleigh 03-23-04, 10:27 AM That does sound like the easiest way to do it.
However, the Nav. unit Bose system is a completely different animal than the non-nav. Bose system. An upgrade is possible, but as Miscreant pointed out, it will be costly.
I think I read a thread somewhere on this before on one of the forums... I'll see if I can find it. I have an '03 with Nav and no XM. I went to the dealership and was told that an FM transmitter was the only way to do it. I'm currently running an FM transmitter to get my iPod to work, but I live in Huntington Beach and there are so many radio stations that the FM transmitter is kind of flaky. I guess we are all on the same page here and are waiting for an easy way to get line level signals into the stereo system! The aftermarket XM options are all pretty good, and you can get most of them for under $200. I installed one with an FM modulator in my father's Envoy, and he has no complaints at all. A couple years ago I installed one in my wife's Volvo with a cassette adapter, and the quality is just fine. Neoflex 03-23-04, 12:02 PM Or if you go aftermarket you can go with a better satallite provider and go SIRIUS. OK OK FLAME ON! :lildevil: :bonkers: I found this posted on the XMFAN.com forum.
Hi all,
I new to this forum and will soon be new to XM. I've done extensive research on adding xm to factory premium bose 6 disc changer systems that are xm ready. Here's the low down:
The bose systems are XM ready if you have a band and CD/AUX button. You can buy the module and antenna from the dealer at their prices or you can go to GM parts direct. Here is their web address http://www.gmpartsdirect.com. (http://www.gmpartsdirect.com./) The part number for the XM module is 93441805 and the XM antenna is 15174788. This is all you need to upgrade your XM ready factory systems. If you call the dealer parts folks and ask them about upgrading, they will tell you really quick " It can't be done", this is because those guys only know how to input part numbers and if you don't have a part number they're lost. GM in the near future will make available an upgrade kit for those who didn't choose XM when purchasing their new vehicle. The aforementioned parts are the exact items found in late model (03 and up) XM equipped vehicles and best of all it doesn't void your warranty. It's taken me weeks of going to just about every Chevy dealer in Central Florida to get this info. My order should be here in a few days. The dealers want upwards of $200 to install it for me. They're on DRUGS!! I'll do it my self.

GMAN miscreant 03-24-04, 09:56 AM I think you'll find that this is concerning the BOSE radios found with the GM24 interface (like Chevy and GMC trucks, Pontiacs [monsoon], Cadillac Escalades, etc.). Unfortunately, the CTS (and SRX and XLR) are much more complex systems.
I am going to research this more for everyone, but as explained above, the schematics I show, show the XM signal going through the Rear Integration model, and through the VCM, before the radio. Whether anything happens to that signal as it passes through, that's the question...
