View Full Version : sick 425 hogdaddy 03-10-07, 12:54 AM got a 79 deville with sick motor.....bad lower end! Better to rebuilt???What's better motor to swap in?Of course 350 chevy 1st choice...any others?so far I only got $200 in it my purchase price...got a new paint job and new headliner...thanks for your help.... caddydaddy 03-10-07, 08:22 AM If you're looking for more power, I'd buy a junkyard Cad 472 or 500 and drop it right in! It's an easy swap, and a big increase in power. The Ape Man 03-10-07, 10:30 AM If you want a motor that you can beat the snot out of then go with a 350 Chebby. If you want an easy swap then look for a 500 Cadillac. The 1970 high compression 500 makes the most rated power but isn't easy to find. 1975 or 1976 500 engines are common and seem easy to use in stock form to wake up a 4000 lb car. Add a set of lower numerical ratio axle gears with positraction as the most bang for your $. got a 79 deville with sick motor.....bad lower end! I think the 425 is a tougher engine than a 350. If you want more power go with the 472 or 500 but keeping the 425 is a no brainer, those engines run and run and run. Someone must've done something bad to that car to ruin the bottom end of a 425. eldorado99 03-13-07, 03:10 PM I think the 425 is a tougher engine than a 350. The 425 may run longer, but you can rebuild a 350 for less than the price of a box of matches. cadillac_al 03-13-07, 04:06 PM I'm in the same boat. I was thinking of putting in a 472 or a 350 Olds that I have around but I think I will just fix the 425;spun bearing. If yours still runs and is just knocking, it may be easier to just put a new crank and bearings in it. The 425 may run longer, but you can rebuild a 350 for less than the price of a box of matches.
Since I have never had to crack open a 425 so I have no idea what one would cost to rebuild. I've popped a few 350's though. hogdaddy 03-23-07, 01:56 AM eureaka! 500 it is...got motor, and trans still attached....now to find out what year it is?got a lil de-smog work to do..But it's supposed to be a runner...Hoping to make the Des monies Meet...now to get a E&g grille...5th Wheel...and 22's:bouncy: The Ape Man 03-23-07, 10:13 AM I think the 425 is a tougher engine than a 350. A 350 Chevy will take more abuse than a 425. The stroke is shorter. The 425 is much better to haul weight. If you like to rev the engine looking for power then the Chebby will last a lot longer. Of course I'd rather watch a Chevy powered vehicle shrink into my rearview mirror than drive one. A 350 Chevy will take more abuse than a 425. The stroke is shorter.
No it won't. :p
I have sufficiently test both engines in this regard. The 425 may run longer, but you can rebuild a 350 for less than the price of a box of matches.

Guess it does not matter. The guy bought a 500 which is also tougher than a 425:rolleyes: 500 will be excellent to tow the 5th wheel down to the trailer park!
