: You know what I don't get about "The Departed"?

semi-rant:

I assume everyone has seen this movie already since it won an oscar for best picture. I really enjoyed the beantown accents and some of the drama & gansterism. But I just read in in article that it was based on the life of the infamous Whitey Bulger. Then why in the entire movie are they talking on cell phones and sending text messages? Whitey's heyday was the 80's and he dissapeared for good in 94. A huge part of the movie was sending text messages which didn't really become popular until about 3 years ago. So while it was interesting the drama created from all the text messaging and cell phone calls; Whitey Bulger never had a CELL PHONE or used one!! IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. They're driving old cars in the movie, but they have new fangled cell phones... does this annoy anyone else? How did it get best picture with this huge flaw?

Another talking point:

The movie does glorify the bulger gang in a robin hood sort of way. Interesting article on the people who were affected by Bulger in the Boston area.

I did like the movie more than little miss sunshine though...

Little Miss Sunshine sucked a$$. But who cares about the whole cell phone thing. If that's the worst thing you can come up with then I am fine with that. It was a great movie and I thought everybody did a great job in it

AJ--I totally agree. A "period" movie should be true to the period it's set in. This has always been a pet peeve of mine. Another sign of anal-retentiveness...ahaha.

Hell I had this movie on my Zune a month before it even came out on DVD and it's in DVD quality! But I just got done watching it again tonight. I rented it on HD DVD and first off it looks amazing! But when I was watching it I realized that this isn't a period piece. It's set in current time but the movie is based off of a crook from back in the day. I mean I'm watching the movie and their on cell phones, there are Dell computers with flat screens and Dell lap tops, when Matt Damon's chick is listening to the CD that Leo sent her she's listening to it on a McIntosh stereo system, etc.

When the movie starts, and you hear "Gimme Shelter" and see Jack Nicholson playing a mobster, you know it's gonna be a good flick!

It's just a movie which by definition has nothing to do with truth or reality, remember that. It's merely a vehicle for fortune, fame and entertainment in that order. Just because a movie is said to be based on real life or actual events does not mean that it will be the least bit accurate or truthful.

Agreed. IIRC, that was a medium red Roadmaster right? The shade lighter than the Roadmaster I had. The other part I didn't like was when they torched that ~'95 Town Car, I think that was close to the beginning.
