: Is $1500 a good deal for having my headgaskets replaced?

I know a mechanic that said he'd do the headgaskets on my car as a side job for $1500. Is that a good deal? How much do shops usually charge?

He's very good and seems to know exactly what he's doing but he's working this out of his garage with no lift and he has to take the engine out. Do you think he's in over his head with this one?

If he's done it before you're getting a very good price. Is he planning to timesert the block? That's something that usually has to be done and should be planned on from the start.

You can remove the engine without a lift. Various ways to do it. See the " Head gasket repair part 1" thread in the tech tips section. Quite a few people have done it at home without a lift.

If timeserting means rethreading the head bolts, than yes he is.

I guess I'll have him do it if that price is very good.

Shop prices are ususally in the $3000-3500 without timeserts.

Sounds like he knows what he's doing. Just verify he's timeserting it and not helicoiling it. Helicoils are not strong enough and not recommended by GM.

$1500 sounds too good to be true, confirm that he is timeserting the block the timesert kit alone is about $350 - $400 I think... All 20 bolt holes must be done..

If he is doing the job including Timeserts for $1500, don't forget to kiss him. :worship:
