I recently came across a super deal ($250) on a complete 368 engine and a TH-400 transmission. I've been looking for something to swap into my '62 Chevrolet C10. This 368 is carbureted...no V-8-6-4 stuff to worry about. I just want a big-block to fill up my engine bay, and I also need something that will sound good with a set of Flowmaster mufflers. I'm not building a drag-racer. The 425s, 472s and 500s in this area are really expensive, and I'm not paying $500-$600 for a clapped-out small-block Chevrolet engine. Would the 368 be decent for a 1/2 ton truck?

Really, just anything you can offer information-wise on the 368 or opinions about my swap is definitely appreciated.

I've had a number of 368s over the years and still have 2. They are great at lugging 4000 lbs around with low gearing. One of the best ever gas mileage engines of it's era. Horsepower rating isn't anything to write home about. Beat it and it will break. Probably not the best choice for a hot rod. I'd look for something with less stroke and plenty of bore.

My 425 is pretty lame compared to a 472. I think it is rated at 180 hp. It feels about the same as a 305 chevy to me. I see 500 caddys for sale all the time. If you are just going to idle around at car shows the 368 will be just fine but if you want to have some fun I would recommend the 472/500 or a clapped out 350 with a spray can rebuild lol. I'd sell my 472/th400 for $500 if someone wanted to travel all the way up I95 to get it. Peace.
