Well i was board at work today and had time so i put my 03 STS on the dyno and made a few pulls the first pull was ran at normal running temp it made 215 hp 219 tq the next run was good and heat soaked it put out 209 hp 215 tq last run was back to normal running temp with no air filter just pulled the filter and housing so it was just the maf in open air it put out 222 hp 222 tq this car is all stock at this time and has 100,000 miles on it and it needs a tune up but i wanted some baseline numbers. i cant seem to be able to upload the graphs i have if some if someone well let me email them to load i will do that

Wow, a 7 hp increase by removing the airfilter & housing. I guess all those people who say the stock air filter isn't restrictive were wrong.

I don't know...something doesn't look right with those graphs.

Your 3rd run (222 hp), it looks like it spun all the way up to 6000 rpm, but there is data missing between 5600 and 5900 rpm, which is close to peak for these engines. Your 1st run (215 hp), it looks like the power started falling off after 5400 rpm, which shouldn't be (HP peak is supposed to be at 6000 rpm).

What explains the data gaps in all the graphs in that 5600-5900 range? This data looks incomplete to me (no offense to you, just incomplete enough to draw any conclusions).

It is interesting that by removing the airbox and filter ENTIRELY produced a 7 hp gain. If you have a chance to run again, I'd like to see one with the airbox left on, but filter removed, to see how much the FILTER itself is or isn't a restriction.

Thanks for the info! It's not often we get actual data to work with when it comes to HP claims. :)

very cool
any one else see those new crappy "ram-air" intakes on ebay for our cars lol

the gaps in the graph are do to rf interference but the motor is planning off by that time if it was still going up it would only be a couple this was done just to get an idea of were i am at.the run without air filter was just to see but the power increase was all across the power range at least from 3700 and up next time i put it up there i will put a reflector pickup on it so there wont be any gaps in the data and i will just pull the air filter out and leave the housing on just to see. it will be a while before i put it back on i am going to change the plugs and get it ready for n2o and use some of the bg top end cleaner these numbers seem about 15-20 HP lower that i thought it might put down i guess i thought it would at least put out 230-240 these numbers indicate a 25% loss if my motor is putting out 300 a lot of miles on it build up of crap in the motor and cat could be a problem

If you suspect a poor cat, that might be explained by the "flatter" curve above 5000 rpm. In general, the HP peak is "supposed" to be at 6000 rpm for the L37 engine, so even with an older engine that may have lost some power over the years, I would expect the curve to at least maintain its shape.

But really, after 100k miles, with original plugs, and a heavy (but bulletproof) TFWD transaxle, a 25% loss probably isn't that unreasonable. I think most automatic transmissions consume in the neighborhood of 20% engine power.

The 4t80e is a fatty power robber. I estimate about a 23-26% power loss, depending on a lot of factors, including mileage.

It would have been more interesting to see a datalog while on the dyno.

It is nice to see someone stepping up to the dyno, and especially testing something like you did. Definite  from me!

I'll have to get my 2000 STS with the Corsa cat back on a dyno and see what it does!

I'm not really going to buy one. I'm sure they're way to costly for me. Where are you located maybe I'll come to your place and play.

stbtt: Nice STS, black on black like my 2000! :) Can you tell us more about your nitrous system? Make, how you have it set up, HP jets, etc?

stbtt
03-09-07, 09:51 AM
right now i dont have any jet in it all the jets i have are to big to start with will barrow so from a friend to start with and work my way up when im done i will tell you the jet size it is just a 2 stage foger that comes on at the same time and a remote bottle opener i will get a progresive or just a window switch on it soon

How on earth did you remove that tray so you could mount your switches? I have pulled, pried, and tugged on mine but it won't budge, and I don't want to break it.

What's that?
it is a dyno run that tells you how much power is being absorb by the drivetrain you take the car up to 70 mph and let it roll to a stop on its own

It comes out with the center console wood trim piece. Get a plastic wedge and pry up on the outer edges. Four metal clips secure it down. Be careful though, since they have a tendency to come off and go down into the console. An magnet can usually fish them out pretty easily. It helps if the gear selector is in 1 or 2 to make room for the wood section to slide up and over it.
