View Full Version : New 427 or Magnacharger! TXSilverV 03-04-07, 08:48 AM Well it looks like my engine is screwed! Fixed a bent exhaust valve and started the car up and it bent another one. Fixed that and now #1 is not firing. Checking pushrod/valve clearance, and etc.. on monday.
So here is my question!
I can get a heck of a deal on a built 427! I would have to get it installed and I would use my exsisting cam and heads if they are not milled to much. I would be around 500-550 RWHP with the set up.
Or I can do the Maggie once my motor is repaired. I'm at 427RWhp now but not sure how much power I will get from the maggie as I don't even know what the compression ratio is on my motor. Not sure if it will like my cam either(228/232 .588/.595 114). So what do you guys think!
:bighead: < This is what I have felt like trying to figure out what to do with this thing. Other option is always get rid of it and just by a new Z06 and be done with it. Feffman 03-04-07, 09:49 AM TXSilver:
Assuming the 427 is the new LS7 (www.GMPartsDirect.com - $12,500) with titanium connecting rods and valves, CNC heads, dry sump oil, 505HP, etc. I'd go with the LS7. Lot of bang and MAYBE with some type of engine warranty.
Feff TXSilverV 03-04-07, 10:08 AM It's not the LS7 just the block and then it will have all forged internals and fast 90 intake and TB. It will be good for about 550RWHP and will be balanced and blueprinted. It will cost me around 6,500 after I sell some parts from the stock motor. I'd go with the 427. You know you're getting a new engine that (I assume) will be warrantied. Even if you get yours fixed, throwing a maggie on it may make it hard to have warranty work done on it later if it fails again. Plus there's no heat soak issues and if you decided to get really crazy down the road and go for mega horsepower then you've already got the engine in place to do it. to more cubes. Can't get the whole family in the Z06 if thats a problem. Otherwise I say Z06 all the way!
You can then donate the maggy to me and I'll drive by your house once a week so you can hear it. :) urbanski 03-04-07, 10:36 AM still coming to the meet? TXSilverV 03-04-07, 10:40 AM I'll still be there! If my car is not fixed yet I'm going to rent a Lotus for the day so I can at least keep up with you guys. No replacement for displacement.. lawfive 03-04-07, 11:48 AM ^^ Yeah, that. Built 427 for an incremental $6.5K? That's a no-brainer. Florian 03-04-07, 11:53 AM 427...then we can do an apples to apples comparo. How on this earth are you getting an LS7 for 6.5K? I get stuff for cheap and I cant even get that kind of deal....BTW, you cant use LS6 heads on an LS7...gotta start from scratch, or do you already have an LS7? Kinda vague....

Ww heavymetals 03-04-07, 12:27 PM I got ya beat, I bent every valve. Albertan 03-04-07, 12:32 PM Okay, just how high do you have to rev these things to bend the valves? I'm assuming LS6? Any idea for the LS2?
Bruce heavymetals 03-04-07, 12:55 PM You don't have to rev it high at all.
Just install an overly long pushrod and turn it over.:thepan:
MOD HELL! TXSilverV 03-04-07, 01:36 PM First bent valve was due to a mis shift while racing an new Cobra! The next one is still a mystery.
Looks like the 427 is what I'm going to do. My motor should be fixed on monday so I guess I'll start to part it out while the new motor is being built.
Oh and by the way I did a 100 shot which would put me at 500RWHP and I still lost to the Cobra! That is why I need more HP as I hate to lose at anything. So I guess a 427 with a 200 shot should take care of my Cobra friend. LOL heavymetals 03-04-07, 01:56 PM If your gonna go through all the trouble then get an LSX block and go for the gusto.
Throw mega bucks at it too! I have a co-worker with a modified 03 Cobra that's putting 600 to the wheels. Better keep going ;) Making a turd go fast isnt hard. Having a luxury car that goes fast is much nicer. heavymetals 03-04-07, 03:23 PM I think your gonna have to modify your V into a funny car before you catch that Cobra. :alchi: TXSilverV 03-04-07, 03:38 PM Well I guess my 427 with a 200 shot is not enough! LOL
I guess i'll have to shot the tires out on that ugly turd! Drift-caddy 03-04-07, 08:15 PM Well it looks like my engine is screwed! Fixed a bent exhaust valve and started the car up and it bent another one. Fixed that and now #1 is not firing. Checking pushrod/valve clearance, and etc.. on monday.

I though he said 550 RWHP and a 200 shot. That would be around 847 @ the crank vs. 720. Hmmmm, less money and it will idle and get 20+ mpg. TXSilverV 03-05-07, 08:14 AM Hey Damian I sent you a PM I need your number to arrange the pick up. TXSilverV 03-05-07, 08:19 AM Oh! That engine would look so good in my V! Man that thing is sexy!
My wife told me I have gone off the deep end! She said just get rid of the V and get what ever I want but get a car that needs no work or hours of me on the internet. I told her I want a new ZO6 and keep my V with a new engine. She told me to grow up and go to sleep!LOL RamAir02 03-05-07, 08:41 AM 427  No doubt. If your two choices are built motor or power adder, a forged big cube motor should OBVIOUSLY come first! :) Then once you get some more spare cash, you get a power adder...and run tons of boost muhahahahaha! Dennisscars 03-05-07, 08:54 AM I see your 847 and raise to 1000

Does your wife have a twin that lives in Arizona? I hear the same thing! rand49er 03-05-07, 09:44 AM Does your wife have a twin that lives in Arizona? I hear the same thing!Well, for sure she doesn't have a triplet living in Michigan 'cause I sure don't hear that kinda talk coming from my wife! Seattle CTS-V 03-05-07, 01:40 PM ^^ My wife has lately been telling me to go out and just get a Porsche and 'be done with it all'. She hates how often Baby-V is in the shop. I just tell her that I'll modify anything I buy anyways...and it's far cheaper to mod the V than a 911! IMHO, I don't want 'just another 911'. I much prefer the exclusivity of the V. Does that make me C R A Z Y??
BTW, go 427. Dennisscars 03-05-07, 07:28 PM or Chef's new hood design...

After the day I just had that was great! First smile of the day. I'm going to show that picture to my wife and tell her this is the car I'm buying. She is going to be pissed! c5racr1 03-05-07, 07:38 PM put a maggie on the 427 Dennisscars 03-05-07, 07:42 PM Since you'll no doubt be sleeping on the couch tonight anyway....

Of course you could always go light on the compression ratio and set yourself up for a supercharging the 427 later. TXSilverV 03-06-07, 08:10 AM Do you have any pictures of your 427? I would love to see it. 427 without any doubt, unless, of course, the whine of the supercharger is something that you desire.
Also, Magna has the "mega" supercharger that I'm certain would turn an LS6/LS2 into an absolute BEAST. And while it is true that there is no replacement for displacement, I really only believe that when it comes to the N/A world. In the supercharged world, the game is different. It's all about flowing air and compressing air makes the engine vastly more efficient (note that reliability issues are ignored for these purposes).
I shudder to think, however, of how many other driveline mods that must be considered when putting 500-600+ rwhp down in a CTS-V. 427 for sure and add a turbo later. :cool2: |
