How much fluid in rear diff do I need for a change?

Remove this ad
Im getting conflicting info on the rear diff. I saw a thread for the previous gen and the guy who put the How to up said it took almost 6qts to refill the rear diff when he removed the back "bowl" cover to drain the oil since there is no drain plug like the front diff.

Now when I look at Amsoils website it shows 4.3pints (which is a shade over 2qts).

I already changed the front and it took a little over 1.5qts.

What I dont want to get into is that i drain it and find out 5-6qts come out and I technically only have 3.5qts of the Amsoil Severe Gear.

Anyone know for sure what the rear takes? (BTW I got a 2007 Escalade ESV)

Re: How much fluid in rear diff do I need for a change?

The largest rear diff GM uses is for the 3500 series and that only holds 8 1/2 pints or a little over 4 quarts. I have changed all my 2007 and up trucks and the rear diff will take less than 3 quarts, probably just over 2. Here is a list of all the GM front and rear diffs

Differential, with 8.25 ring gear Front..........3.5 pints
Differential, with 9.25 ring gear Front..........3.7 pints
Differential, with 10.50 ring gear Rear..........5.5 pints
Differential, with 11.50 ring gear Rear..........7.6 pints
Differential, with 8.60 ring gear Rear..........4.3 pints
Differential, with 9.50 ring gear Rear..........5.5 pints

Re: How much fluid in rear diff do I need for a change?

Thanks hcvone.

Not sure how that other fellow put 6qts in his previous gen Escalade rear diff then. This helps thanks. Off to changing the rear diff after a drive to warm it up.

Then my garage will have that nasty gear oil smell my wife loves.

I would like to see that too, told my shop that and they said must have had oil all over the floor.

Re: How much fluid in rear diff do I need for a change?

Ive done that before (of having a good 2-3qts all over the floor). That damn gear oil has one of the most nastiest smells of any fluid/lubricant. It lingers in the garage for days even after cleanup.

You are right about the smell, the synthetic is even worse. I use my oil suction unit and you get almost no smell and it's easy to use, got it for my home generator and found all kinds of uses for it

Re: How much fluid in rear diff do I need for a change?

Yeap I got one of them oil suction units, I find it hard to get that mofo under the car to pull oil out the diff. Easier for me to just pop the back bowl cover a tad and let it drain out. Whcih I did a few hours ago and took me about 30mins. Ended up using just a shade under 2.5qts.

I love them oil suction units thought, used them all the time on my S55, S600, never get under or raise the even, even the damn filter above. I tried to use it on my 2009 Dodge Ram, damn Dodge makes their oil dipstick tubes long and S curved which causes the tube from my unit to get hung up and not all the way down.

I have another one.. Supercharger Oil (I am assuming the breakdown of fatty acids that it contains) used -- Most vile smell known to mankind.. I changed it in my SSEi over at my parents, on ramps, outside, about 250ft away from the house and my mom came outside and thought something had died.
