The folks that had platinum stocks thought they were going to make a killing when the CAT convertor was adopted. There are other platinum group metals(Vanadium, paladium) used as well. It turns out that the platinum group metal coating on the internal filling of a CAT is very thin. The amount of catalyst in each converter is only about 1.5 grams; about $45 worth. A catalyst promotes a chemical reaction but does not enter into the reaction and is not consumed but it can be poisoned by all kinds of stuff that people dump in the gas tank.

Neither are radioactive in their most widely used form. Vanadium is a widely used alloying element for steel and was highly touted by Henry Ford and used extensively in the Model T. Palladium is widely used for decorative plating.

Most guys don't know how to sniff out an aftermarket calibration.
    It can be tricky.
They won't check for it if you don't mention mods.

Any visible mods might red flag them to look deeper however.

Lots of good info on how cats work on wikipedia.

You have a $60K vehicle under warranty. Why would you fool around with the electronics by plugging in a diag tool and resetting the trouble codes? Just a question.

I do it all the time, rather fix it myself if possible, or at least know what the problem is, my dealer trusts me enough to order the parts when I tell him the problem, and less chance of anything happing to the truck if I do not have to take it to the dealership.

I also like to know before I bring it in what is going on even though I don't actually fix anything myself. Ditto on they trust me when I say it tripped a code and tell them what the code was.

Side query: Where can I get the code key for the 07 Lade. The Preditor did not come with a code key booklet like my Superchips did.

Are you talking error codes? I get them from the service manual, I have seen a list on the internet but that was some time ago.

Yes. I am referring to diagnostic error/trouble codes. I don't have a service manual. If anybody has a link for same (07 Escalade), it would be greatly appreciated.

OR, does the Preditor give me the number code as well as a brief decription of the malfunction? If so, I don't need anything else. I have not had any trouble codes to pull yet, so I have no idea what the Preditor will "tell" me. My older 01 tahoe Superchips used to simply give me a trouble code number - thats all, which was useless to me without a decription. Superchips included a pamphlet of trouble code definitons with the product so when you pulled a code, you could cross reference the problem in the booklet.

The problem with some of the programmers in the past was the codes were not correct for that car/truck, and it would get confusing. I will look around for the info, I would like to say if I get the time I would make a sticky with the codes, but I don't have the time, maybe I can get my secretary to get to it some time soon.

ever since I cleared the check engine light the second time, it hasn't come back on. Is the problem still there? or does this mean it is gone?

What it really means is that if there are no codes stored, the dealer can't fix it anyway because they have nothing to go on.
Wait for it to come back on then take it in straight away.
If it doesn't come back, then be glad.
I'd stay away from the additives.

No need to give the dealer all that info.
Wait for the MIL to come on (check engine light) and take it in, act dumb and tell them the check engine light just came on.
    It's bad to act dumb.
It's worse if you're not acting.
