First winter with my EXT on 24's... What should I expect?

Remove this ad
This is my first winter with my 02 EXT. First off how are these things in winter being that they are AWD and not 4WD? My EXT doesn't have a LOW or anything like that so I really have no idea what to expect. To to things off I have 24's on it with Perelli Scorpions. At first I though bigger tires would be better in the snow but now that I'm reading the posts I think I may be wrong. I have a friend that has 22's on his 03 EXT & he said they suck & he slides a lot. What should I expect?

Re: First winter with my EXT on 24's... What should I expect?

You do not want to go through winter on 24's, especially if you are going to experience snow and ice. First of all, the traction with your 24's won't be as great as your stock wheels. The 24" tire is a low profile tire. Second, the salt that is put on the roads to diminish the ice is very corrosive to the wheels and it could potentially corrode the chrome off your wheels. My suggestion would be to remove the 24's for winter and put the stock wheels back on. Hope this helps.

Thanks.

I agree. Most guys up north wil only run the bigger wheels in the summer. Take the 24's off for the winter. The salt is going to ruin those 24's!

Re: First winter with my EXT on 24's... What should I expect?

absolutely.. take those wheels off... personally i had 19's on my cts and had no issues but then again i would still go out in the winter and wash the wheels.. safest thing to do is to go stock or buy a cheap set of chrome wheels.. i just bought a set off ebay rim and tire forl ike 600.. nice set of 20's for the winter.. still keep the chrome but at least i wont care if they get damaged... plus the traction will be a little better than 22's.. if you have the stock rotors you can even go better and get a set of 18's.. i had to go 20's cuz i have the Baer Eradispeed kit on my truck.. here a pic of the wheels i got for 600...

Re: First winter with my EXT on 24's... What should I expect?

I live in the Phila area, and have lots of customers with 22's , 24's and 26's, they always ask me "why are these trucks so bad in the snow" and I tell them they are great in the snow, and I spend a lot of time in upstate NY and Quebec, but not with the stock tires, and of course of how bad our roads are, and will be by winters end, many of my customers have had to purchase a wheel or two from hitting pot holes or sliding into a curb because their trucks would not stop, due to the poor traction of their tires. I put good traction tires Bridgestone Revo's on for the winter, you have to if you want to get around where I live. If you live and drive in an area where the roads are flat you will be fine with your stock tires, if not you may want to take off the stock ones and get good tires, and you can get stock rims on E-Bay very cheap.
