The gm solenoid mount design is kind of a weak link because of this. I can't tell you if this could possibly damage the electronics in your car but we used to use a screw driver to jump the terminals on the solenoid/starter on old cars. If the starter cranked, we new the solenoid was bad.
    I had a guy do that trick on my cordoba once

    What we didn't know was the starter was in a bind(man that was a sticky spot I hope I am never in again)
