Roof Crossbar Removal - Do it now

    Folks,

I know there are threads on crossbar removal, and they helped me finally figure out how to do it, but I just had to let you all know my experience.

I'd been meaning to remove the crossbars on my 2004 ESV almost since I purchased it in 2010, but I kept forgetting to do it, and/or couldn't easily remove the roof rail end caps. Anyway, I finally did it yesterday, and the reduction in wind noise is shocking. I figured it would make things quieter on the highway, but it's night & day.

If you don't regularly use your crossbars for a roof rack, I encourage you to remove them ASAP.

I have the whole roof kit removed on mine. I think it looks a little smoother without it on.

Mine have never been used, and now that I have a trailer, I will probably never use them. Any tricks to getting them off?

The bars aren't hard to remove they have a knob at each side that releases it

The "trick" that I couldn't easily figure out was getting the end caps off. You have to wedge something under them (be careful of the paint) and pry up - not rearward, as I was trying to do. They pop up and out. Both crossbars have to be slid out from the rear. There is a small tab you need to press down to get them to slide out once you've loosened the knobs. You have to press the tab twice on each side.

Excellent! I think I tried just unscrewing the bars a few years ago and couldn't get them off, so I gave up. I'll try your method. That's probably the same way the ones on my Jeep come off.
