2002 Escalade broke down - to fix or not to

$165K miles. Started grinding over the weekend. Mechanic is recommending transmission being rebuild. Will cost about of $2800.

It runs and looks and good very well. Only major work was changing the water pump and gas pump couple of months back. Never been in any accidents and even the paint looks good. I asked the mechanic if he were to take it, what he would pay. He said $500

This is in Bay Area California

    Questions:
    - Is $2800 typical for a transmission rebuild?
    - What is a better path? I dont need this vehicle anymore. Should i fix and sell or sell for next to nothing?
    - What kind of seller should i contact for selling a vehicle with a broken transmission? Place a Craiglslist ad?

Never been in such a situation before. Any pointers will be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Fix and sell it for 5-6k. $500 is scrap metal money.

I second it fix and sell vs scrapping it as the price he offered you is the scrap metal price and a 02 is still a good truck to end up there no matter what is wrong with it

A tranny from a salvage yard isn't hard to get ahold of
Heck having the one in the truck rebuilt is also a option

You really need to think this out BEFORE making a decision you will regret later

Shop around. On this side of the country, it might be cheaper:

I placed a Craiglist ad for $1500 and within minutes, i have about 20 emails asking to buy! Now, a few of these look and sound fake, but a few sounds legit (never know). Too late to be calling folks, but i am going to sleep on this decision. Looks like you all are asking me to get it fixed and that sounds like the better option at this point. Will post updates on what i end up with. Thanks for the pointers.

Bro I responded to your post in the 07-14 escalade section.

    here was what I wrote:

$2800+ to fix a 2002 escalade? That is impossible.
Places where I live (New York City) Will easily rebulild your entire transmission & add a new torque converter for no more than $900.
And that will include anywhere from 12 to 24 months warranty.

I had a 2003 hummer h2 tranny rebuilt & new torque converter added in a place called cenco transmission in brooklyn NY with 2 year/24,000-mile warranty & the total was exactly $980. The job was flawless & they even came and picked the hummer in a tow truck for free.

ps: this is the listing for the place that did my 2003 hummer h2 tranny

Where are you located? $2800? Dude that's dealer prices (and not even that much)

You can have a rebuild transmission shipped to you for $750 and you should be able to find a shop to install it for $250.

I have used this outfit before and they ship for free; http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/pts/4112718397.html

    Junkyard man!

Grab a transmission from another Caddy, or cross reference numbers and grab from a Tahoe/Yukon if same. I've bought many many used transmissions over the years that way and most I ever paid was under $800 for working transmission

I think I will do this should my tranny ever fail completely as that's not a bad price

FYI our trucks have the 4L65E tranny
